I recently purchased a new 32-bottle and cannot get the plastic smell out. Here is what I've tried already
1. Week of just open door and bowls of baking soda
2. Week of newspaper and baking soda with door open..still no luck
3. Baking soda/water slurry mix to scrub interior of unit. Let dry. Hot water bath to remove slurry from every inch. Left door open to dry...smell still there after dry
4. Cap or bleach in gallon of hot water. Wash down. Then a hot water bath to wash down. Still smells like plastic...:(
5. Introduced empty boxes with fan on to try to absorb smell and introduce cedar smell. Boxes just absorbed plastic smell. Smell still there after leaving them in for 5/6 days.
6. Just put more baking soda in and left door open to continue to air out.

The gassing process shouldn't take this long, where do I go from here. I'm at a loss completely...any help or advice would be appreciated...

Thanks,

Eric

The only other thing I have seen people do that you haven't tried yet is purchase activated charcoal for an aquarium and leave that in a closed fridge for a few days.

On a side note the baking soda trick as with the activated carbon are both supposed to be done with a closed door so they can absorb the odor.

D/FW. Mesquite to be specific.
I couldn't get the smell out of my 48 quart cooler for shit. So I just said forget it, I put in a tupperdore with my smokes along with two empty cigar boxes. The cedar/cigar smell took over within a few days.

Edit: if I take everything out of it, I can't smell the plastic anymore so it worked

Newspaper and Carbon bomb in the oven..Fire in the hole!!
Now, SHUT THE DOOR!!! Leave it alone, don't touch it, don't mess with it, don't look at it wrong... Leave it alone for a couple of days, then pull everything out, put your smokes and boxes in it, regardless of if it smells or not, it will be minimal and won't affect anything. After you've put everything in it, about a week or two, it will begin to smell like tobacco.

If you're not already doing it, might want to actually plug it in as well as it sits with the charcoal. New electronics always give off a (wonderful) smell in their infancy. Let those fans run!
Yep, exactly what Clint said. I did the wipe down with vinegar to kill bacteria (probably overkill) and then did the Baking soda slurry as you mentioned. Then the activated charcoal. About 9 little dishes and door closed and fridge running. After about 7-10 days, all smell was gone. Then you can start seasoning.

Carbon & plug it in for a week.

Then leave it open for a week.

FWIW, I do not agree with the "just fill it with cigars" approach because I am odor-sensitive, and while this will indeed overcome the plastic stink, it's the same as a dirty 16th century Frenchman dousing with cologne: it's just covering it up, not getting rid of it.

If you are also sensitive to the smell (and if you enjoy a perfect cigar you ought to be), it will take a month or more to get rid of it. Think of how long a new car has that smell.

Take your time & good luck, brother; if you're waiting on Forrest, you've got months to kill anyway.

Lol. I appreciate the help brotha! I got a boat load of Htf & rare collectibles I'm not willing to just "throw them in". Got the charcoal and fans running.
As far as shelves they are being made by a good friend of mine
