As I was crammed inside an elevator this morning with 37 other people on my way up to the office, stopping at every floor, I reflected on the news that Lady Liberty's torch now burns at 300 million candlepower. It should come as no surprise, especially with all of our screwing around (forgive the pun), that sometime this week the 300,000,000th US citizen was born / naturalized / whatever. Look at it this way - we're still only the 3rd most populous country in the world...

Actually, I think the US population is actually fairly stable right now. At least the last time I heard.
Your post might not be seen as PC but I actually agree with you.
To those that had more than 2 children this isn't meant to offend.
But, IMHO you should make efforts to just replace yourself and your wife. These 7-10 children families I see on welfare and medicaid just upset me. They have more and more kids and are rewarded for it. When you add this to the whole illegal alien issue it is something that needs to be addressed.
I know this sounds bad to some but I'm for giving extra money to medicaid/welfare families who will get sterilized. We are creating a nation of dependents, people who want a hand me down and not a help up. And alot of this is from "overbreeding" mainly among the welfare nation. I am certainly concerned about this trend. Good post.

I would gladly pay for the tubal ligation of an individual on medicaid if it meant that not another dime of my hard earned money went into the medicaid system.

No kidding. I grow weary of paying half my money out and watching it being abused by a welfare nation of sloth. Get a freakin job please. I'm personally for helping people out with daycare and even giving some help to low income families. But, to pay people to breed and not work kills me. I see it on a daily basis, then when their carts are filled up with candy, and chips, and beanie babies, and other stupid shit, they complain when one of their medications is not covered by medicaid. Please don't get me started.

By the way - the post wasn't meant to offend; I just get tired of oversensitivity to key issues. It should be mentioned that regardless of the argument, America has reached another milestone of sorts.

To clarify - kids are great if you are capable of providing for them, we need to realize that you can't and shouldn't keep immigrants out with big walls, and as for soylent green - hey, I'll eat anything. At least once.

Are many medicaid and wellfare recipients draining the system? Sure, but it seems that's a problem with the administration of the program. It's almost like we never gave consideration to elements of complacency and dependance as inherently human, and never evolved the proram to truly improve an individual's quality of life.

Again, I didn't want to offend anyone. I feel that the term overpopulation may even be unjustified in the context of a conversation about the US. It's an emerging concern here, but (obviously) a very serious problem elsewhere.

Yes, you are the one calling me saying I need a pre-auth for freaking Celebrex...lol. I do understand. I love seeing my tax dollars paying for
cigarettes and alcohol. I mean don't get me wrong there are hard working people that just need some help from time to time. But, in general the people on the welfare/medicaid systems are products of generational
laziness handed down from parent to child.

Having been on that side of the fence for a short period of time, let me add my comments.

Shortly after my wife and I got married back in 1984 I got laid off. I took the six months of unemployment because I was pissed at my boss and wanted to get back at him. That was one of the most stupid things I've ever done. I worked a couple of other jobs for a short time but spent most of that summer fishing while she worked in my grandmother's restaurant. So what we had for bills was my unemployment and her tips. And that included buying food. When my unemployment ran out I hustled around looking for work but didn't find anything right away so I filed for support. When you've come from two families that were comfortable, it's pretty embarassing to pay for your groceries with food stamps just because you (me) were too lazy to find a job sooner. To make things worse, when I did work they took that out of our benefits so we still couldn't pay the bills on time. It wasn't until I got a full time job that we got back on our feet and out of assistance. During that time we bought pop, a steak now and then but it was mostly hotdogs, mac&cheese, potatoes, whatever was cheap or on sale. Even though I smoked cigarettes at the time I never used our assistance money for that and I didn't drink so that didn't matter. But when I saw people on assistance using it for those things (in a round-about way of course) it made me mad.

The bottom line is that I don't mind my tax dollars going to someone who really needs it, but for the welfare families who are going on the third or fourth generation now I can't stand that. They need to realize that getting a job is much more fulfilling than sitting on your butt all day long.
