Maybe it's like drinking too fast, where it catches up to you all at once... But why does the last 3rd always have the most kick? I'll be smoking at a relaxed pace, no problem. Whenever I get near the end, I seem to get a big nicotine kick in the teeth.

You're probably experiencing the cumulative effects of the entire cigar by that point. Nicotine, like alcohol, takes a while for the body to absorb and to feel the effects.

Plus, and I have nothing to base this on except my own experience and watching others - we often smoke a bit faster as we get near the end. So if you're increasing your draw rate near the end, that could have an effect on you.

Thanks. That's what I was assuming was the case. I actually try to slow down near the end, sometimes to the point where I need to relight

I tought it was the build-up in the cigar itself, or the blend. Some cigars are worst than others at doing that - or at least I notice them more.

You can do yourself a big favor by simply blowing through the cigar a few times (purging) while smoking. I usually do it 4-5 times while smoking and it helps reduce tar build up a bit it seems

Lol I understood. I usually drink water, was worried something flavored might alter the taste. But I have found Dr Pepper has been fine before.

Coke/Root beer/Cream Soda/other sugary stuff will really help.
Just to clarify, the use of the forward means "or" , not "and", right?

I mean, to each his own but you probably do not want to consume Coke AND root beer AND cream soda AND other sugary stuff.
coke mixed with root beer, cream soda, and other sugary stuff is Dericks signature drink, its called the ninja :)

but on a serious note, the sugary stuff helps counter act the effects of nicotine sickness (I think, im not a doctor or anything). I agree with others, at this point it is the cumulative effects of the nicotine from the cigar

Yeah, I used to drink that kind of crap 20 years ago...

However, that IS why I like to have bourbon or rum (or even a Coke) with my cigar. Even better is the Old Fashioned. But I find that, for me, it needs to be sugar - Diet Coke doesn't cut it.

i think the tar builds up a bit also and while smoking through that part it gets a little heavier. I love final thirds for this reason. as it builds up throughout you end up with a thick finish

and in regards to the sugary drink concoction called the ninja...

Also in addition to the soda remedy, sweet tea works great. I avoid soda most of the time now as it gives me bad heart burn/acid reflux. If you do not mind having a little snack and enjoy coffee (which always pairs with tons of cigars) munching on some dark chocolate covered espresso beans can help.

As Craig mentioned above purge your cigar every now and again. I do this with every stick I smoke, not only to help with tar build up but help keeping the flavors fresh.

Do you find that pouring minimizes tar build up or eliminates altogether, Matt?

I would assume some tar build up is unavoidable, but at the same time when tar comes out the end and touches your tongue it is pretty nasty

Speaking from my experience it helps immensely, when I purge I have no recollection of of the bitter tar hit my lips or tongue. Last night on the other hand I slacked and didn't purge on a shorter smoke, afterwards I had the bitterness on my lips for sure.

Interesting. I definitely have noticed build up on a couple particular sticks lately. Tat be reserva and anejo 888 to be precise.

I typically only purge if I relight after it goes out but will try this out.

While I like the thick smoke on some finishes, the actual tar creeping out if the end is the worst!

The last 1/4 of most cigars tend to end in tragedy unless it's a cigar that you've painstakingly have rested where the entire length of the cigar is a true RH from the foot to the head. As we get closer to the end we really do end up taking more draws because we subconsciously know we're coming to the end. I noticed that years ago which is why I use a nubber and relax on the last 1/4 of any cigar...and I draw a bit more slower as well. As much as possible leave at least an inch of ash at the end to help keep the cigar burning cooler...the ash acts as an insulator and I try to keep it at least 2 inches during the first and second third as well.

Trademark pending!

The artificial sweetener doesn't work, but anything with corn syrup actually works faster than sugar. Has something to do with the chemical makeup and how it reacts with nicotine in the bloodstream.

This. I don't know how it works technically speaking, but I know that leaving some ash does seem to help a lot. Keeps the cigar burning, especially in the colder seasons, and thus you don't have to "stoke" it as much when you go to take a draw to keep it burning well. Takes a bit of forethought as purging almost always weakens my ash to the point of falling off, so I tend to purge a few times just as I hit the final third and then try to avoid it from then on in so that the ash won't fall again.
