It depends on your personal profile preferences. Mild, medium, strong......spice, woody, floral, etc.
There is no one brand better than the other, just diiferenf flavor profiles and preferences. All hand made CC's go through the same quality control.

Check out some of the habano reviews and go from there. Price is always a starting point if you don't know exactly what you want. Pick what you want to spend and then choose a box in that price range.

I thought, that a lot of the habano cigars were reletively similar due to the fact they are all grown in the same place, I might be wrong. But I am a big maduro smoker, and also like medium to full badied cigars. I thought there might have been on company that produced a superior cigar, like cohiba, or Trinidad. SOmething along those lines

I have always wondered about the huge differences in flavor profiles of CCs, since they are all grown in the same region..I have no idea how the rollers and blenders manage, but they do...

Reading some of the reviews on here would definately be a good way to pick a cigar....However, you may want to just put up an ISO on the trading post, and see if a brother here can set you up a with a couple fivers of different smokes...You'll spend the same for a good selection here as you would for a box, and you know that you are getting good stuff with a large flavor range...Then you can find something you like, and stick with it....I would offer to put something together for you, but I don't have much of a selection...

If your asking what our favorite CC company is then I would say mine is Vegas Robaina. It's only been around for like 9 years but every VR I have had has been dead on. But, like these guys said it sort of depends on your taste profile. For instance, some LOVE Cohiba and some really don't. I mean it really is just personal preference.

It's all a matter of taste when it comes to Habanos. When you are considering hand made Habanos it isn't like looking at all the handmade manufacturers out there. All Habanos come from one "Company" and that is Habanos S.A. They control everything pretty strictly so there's really no "RyJ is great, but those darn Juan Lopez just suck" kind of thing when it comes to construction or quality. You will see very consistent quality over all the lines. Either good or not so good, but for each year you are bound to see the same quality over all Habanos.

Beyond that, The premiums are gonna be Cohiba and Trinidad because they are marketed that way with Montecristo right behind simply because of the history and it being one of, if not the most recognized Habanos name.

As to them being similiar, yes there is a certain "something" they all have, but beyond that it's not even close. Each brand has it's own particular flavor. Based on what you've said your preferences are I would look into Partagas and Bolivar. Until the Cohiba Maduro comes out there is no such thing as a Cuban Maduro. That being said, the Partagas and Bolivar lines have what are probably the "earthiest" or "darkest" profiles among the habanos.

Donk, the only one who "should" ultimately answer that question is you. But I understand you're seeking different opinions to help guide the way. And that's what you'll get, a lot of different opinions.

As far as marcas go, the more experienced rollers are found in the Trinidad and Cohiba factories. Since they're the flagship brands, they're obsessed about quality so these marcas go through a more rigorous fermentation, rolling and quality control process. I can personally attest to having much fewer poorly constructed Cohibas than in any other marca. As far as Cohiba's and trinidad's being cost effective, nah...they're the flagship like I said so they'll be priced as a flagship.

Not knowing your flavor and strength preferences, you're best bet would be to start with brands readily available such as Montecristo, Romeo & Julieta, Hoyo de Monterrey, H. Upmann, El Rey del Mundo and Partagas. Each line has a respetable cigar in their line-up. Try samplers as others have suggested so you can experience the different blends and formats. Enjoy the experience of discovering some of the finest cigars around :smokingme

Cohiba is the only Cuban manufacturer that triple ferments their cigars. Cohiba is know to be the use the highest quality leaves, best rollers, better QC then most other brands. This goes hand in hand with the estimated 30-40% premium you pay for them.

Trinidad came from the government blend that Castro gave out as diplomatic gifts and he smoked the "house blend". Trinidad is know to use the highest quality leaves and like Cohiba holds their cigars to high standards. This goes hand in hand with the estimated 25-35% premium you pay for them.

Far as tastes goes, totally subjective like everything else in life. I may like Vanilla and you like Chocolate. Try samplers as a starting point so you get to know what you like.

From the Aficionado article of an interview with Castro

"Shanken: Trinidad. We understand that it is a brand of cigar that is your own personal brand, which you give to diplomats and friends as presents.

Castro: No. I principally give Cohibas for presents.

Shanken: You don't give Trinidads?

Castro: No. I don't give Trinidads. I give Cohibas. I have been advising the people who are in charge of tobacco production, Cubatabaco, that they should come up with new brands and new blends. This would help the situation with the conflicts over the brands [with similarly named cigar brands from such countries as the Dominican Republic and Honduras]. If we have the best raw material, we have the best soils and the best know-how, why shouldn't we create new brands?

Shanken: The El Laguito factory has a brand called Trinidad, which they say is for you to give as personal gifts. It has become a legend.

Castro: I am not fully aware of that brand, but I assume it is like the Lancero in size from Cohiba. "

My bad, In the MRN book, Adriano Martinez says both brands were given out as diplomatic gifts, but Castro only gave Cohiba same as you quoted above from a 1994 interview.

Later on in 2002, both Trinidad and Cohiba are still given as diplomatic presents. Martinez concludes mostly Lanceros from Cohiba are gifted by Castro.

Thanks Frank.
