Anybody ever weigh a cigar prior to smoking, and then weigh the ash it produces after fuller burnt? I guess you would have to put the butt in your ash tray after you smoked it down, and hit it with a pretty good torch to get the unsmoked portion reduced to ash...I'm wondering this as I smoke a get VR, and watch my Raiders blow another game...

I just might have to give it a shot sometime....I've got a digital scale for measuring powder when I hand load, so I can get a pretty accurate read...

Sir Walter Raleigh wondered the same thing in the 1500's, but with pipe tobacco. Check this out.

From :The Baldwin Project

One day while smoking before the Queen (Queen Elizabeth), Raleigh laid her a wager he could weigh the smoke coming from his pipe. The Queen accepted the bet. Raleigh thereupon weighed a small quantity of tobacco, smoked it all, and then carefully weighed the ashes. The difference between the weight of the tobacco and the weight of the ashes, he said, must be the weight of the smoke. The Queen laughingly paid the wager.

They also talked about this not to long ago it the movie Smoke (1995).

I wonder if you could get a grant from the Gov. to study this? If so, let me know if you need an assistant.

You know, I could sure as hell try! In the interest of National Security :ninja: There may be a terrorist plot with ashes, and cigars, and smoke some day...That is the way I will sell it to Homeland Security! SIr Walter Raleigh..Really...Seems great minds truly do think alike...Weight of the smoke...Well, time to go draft up a mission plan and call DHS :bangbang:

Ah yes, the movie Smoke. That is where I heard about it. The DWSC was also talking about it this week.

This was in Dogwatch this last week.

The flaw: If you chew the cigar or even keep it in your mouth gently, you throw off the calculation by either biting off tobacco or adding saliva. PLUS, being out in the unconditioned air will result in humidity evaporating from the said cigar.

So; close, but no cigar :bouncetau

You are also not taking into account the moisture that will leave as steam and not smoke from said tobacco as it is smoked....

As a response to a previous post, the weight of the moisture would not matter. In the end, all the moisture would be boiled out if it did not evaporate, so that part of the equation does not matter. The only part that would matter would be if any tobacco is lost at the nose while smoking. If you are careful with the cigar this should not factor in. Give it a try and see what you get. Make sure you burn even the nub of the cigar to get an accurate measurement.

And remember, my word is law, I'm a science teacher:nodlaugh: !

I still see no reason to do this, but whatever floats one's boat, go for it. I see spit/saliva on the ends of my sticks after smoking, so some additional weight there is what I believe Kurtdesign is speaking of.
