So I've run Mac, Windows and Linux over the years (professionally at the SysAdmin level) and Macs are my favorite hands down. Now I do agree they are extremely pricey, but at the end of the day if you're a power user OR a 'mommy/daddy' they are the machine for you. It's a just-works system with all the power a scientist could need underneath without ever getting in your way.

This message brought to you on a 2010 MacBook Pro that is still kicking ass.
Fantastic feedback, especially hearing you're machine is still fully functional. A problem I have with two plus year old PCs. They may work, but never like they did in their prime. They always seem to operate like a new vehicles equity :)

+1 to that. 2009 MacBook Air here. Full disclosure, I did have to get the Keyboard replaced about a year ago, but I'm an angry typist, none of my Computers have kept their original keyboards. My work laptops have an average keyboard life of about a 2 years.

I've had both, I've built both… I prefer Mac for many things. If you want, I can get you a 10% discount off of Apple when you order online. I recently donated my 2006 Apple MacBook Pro to a fellow BOTL who continues to use it without problem ;-)

Please also realize that most computers are built to last for a finite amount of time. The computer industry (like many industries) realized that people would continue to spend their money when something they liked no longer worked.

Apple! Never look back…….. unless you work for a corporation that has rules and say you must own a PC or if you have certain programs that flat out work better on PC. I own my own company and travel a lot…."Apple" allows so much more plus you don't have to wait for it to boot up. That is all!

One thing I like about Apple is that they seem to stand behind their stuff pretty well (he says typing on a Lenovo). When you try to get support on a PC (in my experience), the HW guys blame windows, the windows guys blame the hardware, etc. No one wants to support it. Same with my last android. With Apple, I walk into the apple store and someone fixes it.

That said, you pay a big premium for the logo.

I switched from PC to MAC 6 years ago and have not regretted it once. Have never had a problem with and it always fires up. Although, the battery life has taken a pretty good hit lately, but after 6 years I would expect that. My wife on the other hand has gone through 3 PC's and the kids have gone through 2 and they all hate Widows 8.
I did buy my wife an IPad with a Bluetooth keyboard integrated into the case that works really well. She always carries it with her. Have you looked at that option?

I say Mac. They are easy to use and they will fix it if something happens. I'm a PC guy but I only have a desktop I bought for playing games only.....

Got my dad on the same setup. For his daily email / web browsing, he pretty much never even turns his laptop on anymore.
This might be a road you want to explore for her.

If you can Afford it make the wife happy what else is there.
So for Christmas my wife wants earrings...easy enough.

I'm also thinking about a new laptop since ours is toast and she uses my work one when I'm home.

She is picking up her new hipster iPhone 6 this weekend and I'm thinking of surprising her with a new Macbook pro for Christmas from the kids.

My question for anyone Apple savvy or up to date on laptops in general...is it really worth all that extra coin? I'm thinking the 15" Pro with 256GB. Talking $2000 give or take! Yikes.

I've always been a Windows guy and solid spec laptops can be had under a grand. Is it worth it or is it Apple hype?

Or do I just do it to make my wife happy? (Is she ever happy? :))

Thanks

I thought this would be a win as well and caved, letting her go down the iPhone path. "It just works" has got to be about the single most laughable statement I've ever heard. She's SO frustrated with it and cannot wait to get back to an Android when her contact is up in January. Her iPhone 5 fails in every comparison to my Galaxy S4. (same network provider) Call clarity, picture quality, dropped calls, random reboots, apps cost more, apps failing/closing. Just wrong on every level. This is her third phone (second replacement) in two years and January can't come fast enough. Now she realizes that all the Apple fanboys have tech problems too, they just don't talk about them for fear of being ostracized from the club. Lucky for me she now sees through the hype, no longer wants anything to do with a Mac, and this iPhone will be the last Apple product purchased in this household for a LONG time!
Shoot, if you're gonna dump the iPhone 5, let me know, I'd love to pick one up.

Count me in the Apple fan club, for a couple reasons. For me, they do just work. To the point where I'm slowly becoming technologically illiterate because Apple's stuff is so easy to use and intuitive. I own a Windows 8 laptop which is actually a pretty nifty device, and it's super cheap (like $200), but it's frustrating to use. Accidental inputs do stuff that's not intuitive at all. I've never had that happen once with the wife's iPad.

Primarily though, I'm a fan of Apple because I'm running an iMac I bought for $1200 over 7 years ago, and have had zero problems. It still runs plenty fast enough for me to do just about anything I want to do on it. I also just like the very clean, wireless, all-in-one design of the iMac, bluetooth mouse, and keyboard.

I still use my 2007 MacBook. Have been very happy with it. I have had to replace my battery and power supply in the last 2 years. Other than that it has been great. Now that I have an iPad I am looking into an iMac to eventually replace my laptop. So a vote for Mac from me.

I'll keep you in mind!
I was going to get the FLIR One attachment and use it for thermal detection, but another company offers one now for my Galaxy, so I likely will have no use for it other than eBay.
