Cigars and Canvas...off shooot of wine and canvas

Looking for some honest input here from the forum. Sorry if this is the wrong place, but there is no cigar art subforum and I'm not sure how often the masses hit up the General Discussion area.

anyhow, my wife did a wine and canvas deal last night. She isn't all that artsy, and she really did a fantastic job with her painting last night. It got me thinking that since I'm a crafty and somewhat artistic individual, I'd probably really enjoy doing such a thing but a) I don't drink wine, b) I don't want to be in a room full of women drinking wine, c) WTF is the point of the wife and I doing the same painting, hanging up next to each other, that would possibly be a bad thing with the whole competitiveness, whose is better etc..... and most importantly... d) I'm a man dammit! I drink bourbon and smoke cigars....then the light bulb went off! Cigars and Canvas!

I know a few local art teachers who do these canvas parties. They generally charge 25-35 buck/canvas depending on the size. Host gets one free. But I don't want a bunch of people smoking cigars and painting in my house, as I don't even smoke in the house. The garage is too damn cold right now. So I got to thinking if that was something that if my local B&M cigar shop might be interested in hosting. Then the next problem was this: Would the regulars buy into it? Would this be something that some "macho" cigar smoking, bourbon drinking dudes enjoy? Would they pony up $35 for 3 hours or so to paint a cigar/tobacco/etc themed painting to put in their mancave? I think some of the regulars would do it. I think others would scoff at it and then kick themselves in the butt once the final canvas is completed.

This something that if your local B&M did, would you participate? Would you do it if they were running a deal on cigars if you participate in the canvas? Or am I just spinning my creative wheels like a hamster in its cage.

Interesting idea. My wife has done the wine thing a few times as well. I think if the subject of the painting was cool I'd be more interested. I wouldn't want to sit around with a bunch of dudes painting a sunset.

I think it's a great twist!

I do see how some men might feel that painting is not as macho as it could be, which is unfortunate since almost every known painter is male.

What about some way to add on another "layer" that would make the idea more acceptable to the male ego? Like maybe it's a fundraiser for a local charity, because a fundraiser would make it "okay", you know?

Please keep us posted...I think it's a great idea with tons of potential

I think that's a pretty cool idea. I would probably do it to add some art to the man cave walls. I gotta say, I did the wine and canvas thing for a friends birthday and was dreading it. BUT you could bring your own booze so I said what the hell. Me and the wife both had a very different rendition of the instructors painting and they both turned out cool so we hung them. Ended up being pretty cool. Hope my man card isn't revoked for committing to such an event...

Sorry, but the marketing side of me is all over this....Try working with a cigar company, and have them provide the cigars.you then have the cost of the cigars covered (or at least discounted) and the brand will get exposure. Maybe they even pony up some special discount for that night or something.

This does sound like a fun event, I would be game for if my local shop did such a thing.

I believe smoke effects the canvas and will be absorb into it there for your canvas always having that smoke smell to it. My wife would hate it if I brought home art that was in a smokey room cause her beagle nose would drive her and me crazy.

I've known one of the art teachers I emailed for about 35+ years, as she was my 1st grade art teacher. She and her daughter actually have a company that does the canvas parties and she thought the idea was genius. She said she would work on a couple of ideas over the weekend and show them to me early next week.

My local B&M shop has been struggling to get people in the shop, since a whole legal issue with BYOB, about 6months or so ago, many folks have just stopped coming in since they can't drink and enjoy a cigar. I will swing by later today and present him with the idea so he can start publicizing it and there is a DE event in 2 weeks, and that is always the best attended event he has. Possible to get more publicity for it at the event.

In regards to the smoke absorbing into the painting.....I have no clue about that. I think that the subject matter should be dude-centric. to work. Not always cigar related, but I think a big bundle of cigar ends/boxes of cigars stacked up etc would look cool, but also, a golf scene, fishing in a river in the woods, stuff like that would be nice.

I'm looking forward to see what the shop owner thinks of my idea. Thanks for the positive feedback.

This sounds like a pretty cool idea. I've not an artistic bone in my body (music, painting, whatever...I suck at all of it), but I'd would definitely come to something like this if it was local to me.

I really hate to be the downer on this, but my OSHA slapped mind keeps reminding me that most chemicals, and paint is a chemical, have warnings about smoking while using them. Primarily because of the ingestion issue. The drinking and painting is fine since you have the drink somewhat contained... Other than that, it sounds like an awesome idea...

I think it's a good idea. If you got a cigar company to work with you maybe they would gift a box of cigars to the winner of the best painting. That should bring in more people.

I think this is genius! Smoke, drink, hang with the fellas, and make some man cave art! Love the idea! I am in NE Indiana and would love to hear how this pans out. Would be willing to make a little road trip with a few buddies to join if any openings available! keep me informed!

Cliché: It depends.
Every 2nd Thursday of the month in downtown Los Angeles, they have an ArtWalk. There is a Cigar lounge within the area called 2nd Street Cigar Lounge and Art Gallery. They've partnered with the ArtWalk organizers at times to tie in with the ArtWalk crowd and it worked well for a while. The lounge has a number of art on the walls. Recently, a local Fine Art Supply store hosted a Plein Air Festival, where in the course of 4 days they had artists throughout the area using different mediums (paint, chalk, charcoal, mixed media, etc.). At the end all the artwork were judged and prizes handed out and many of the entries were bought.
Maybe a similar format may work for you, I have no idea what the environment would be like in your area.
