Hey all. I will be going to Canada from Michigan via car later this year and want to bring some sticks with me. Since I get nervous at border checks for no reason I will blurt out "I has cihars!" Now I've read the official info on this and I understand I can bring in like 50 cigars. iIs this true? How do they know I won't toss my RP seconds and refill my traveldore (which is just a coffee can) with ccs? Also, what are the chances I will get my car searched (no prob there) or get a real a-hole guard who wants to mess with me? Also what are the chances a busty lady mountie will strip search me? Please share your border cigar wisdoms. Thanks.

Where are you crossing? I've brought a few CCs back from Canada (eh) without hassle. 99% of those guards won't know a Cohiba from a White Owl. Don't worry about it. That being said, try not to have a pretty mouth. Remember that they want you to get out of their face so they can wave the next Happy Idiot through. :) have some Better Made potato chips, wash it down with a Faygo or Vernors, then go get some poutine!

Just say "I am bringing Cigars with me that I will consume (smoke) while there".
If you come back with any say "I am bringing cigars back with me that I did not consume (smoke) nor purchase in Canada".
After that answer their questions without any extra info and move along.

DO NOT hide anything or "forget" to tell them. They don't like that.
As for a serch... its random so just hide the pot inside the tires and you'll be fine. :cigar:

I got this info from a good friend of mine in the canadian borders agency:

Anyone entering into the country can bring with them 200 cigarettes or 50 cigars. Any more is subject to duties and taxes.

Canadian taxes are rather High, 100% of msrp if memory serves.

Now, chances of being strip searched by an RCMP lady is nil, as our border agents are not mounties. But we do have quite a lot of ladies agents in the canadian borders agency. Some young and busty. But I doubt they strip search for cigars.

Canada is a big country. Where are you going? If you're anything near Montréal, we need to meet up for a drink and cigar.

I'll be in Toronto anyone want to meetup? Will not be buying ccs there. For the price of a Boli pc I can get 4 or 5 Tat pcr here.
Yep. That's the sad reality of smoking cigars in Canada.

CCs are légal, but the ones you'd bring here would likely have costed you less than what the B&M sell them !

Toronto is about the same distance from Montréal than New York City, minus crossing borders. About 5 hrs road. But we have people in Ontario that are closer.

You are allowed to bring all of the following amounts of tobacco into Canada free of duty and taxes:

  • 200 cigarettes;
  • 50 cigars;
  • 200 grams (7 ounces) of manufactured tobacco; and
  • 200 tobacco sticks.
[paste:font size="4"]Excise Act, 2001 also limits the quantity of tobacco products that can be imported (or possessed) by an individual for personal use if the tobacco product is not packaged and stamped "CANADA DUTY PAID ● DROIT ACQUITTÉ." The limit is currently five units of tobacco products. One unit of tobacco products consists of one of the following:

  • 200 cigarettes;
  • 50 cigars;
  • 200 grams (7 ounces) of manufactured tobacco; or
  • 200 tobacco sticks.

I go to Canada several times a year and haven't had problems going in. My problem was trying to get back into my country! It one of the few trips I made without my wife and on the way back they searched my truck, brought my humidor in and asked me "How many Cubans do you have?" I told them none, which I didn't. Then they asked why I would lie to them! By then I was really pissed but in no position to make any noise. They pulled out every cigar, looked them up on the internet for country of origin while I waited. I even had a house brand from a B&M in Milwaukee and they looked up every shop's site to confirm I wasn't bringing in CCs. 2 hours of my time I'll never get back!.

@tedp. Exactly what I was getting at. How do they know coming back to the U.S. that I didn't just throw out the crap I brought in and replace with the cc? What if the cigars are unbanded seconds so they can;t check what they are? Can't believe they checked each one. What a bunch of dicks!! Hey, border patrol: Drugs and terrorists!!!!! That is all. Thanks for sharing yr experience. I may not be bringing any cigars back over if that's how they treat ya.

If you do go the unbanded route, and they ask you what 2nds they are, make sure you have a 2nd in mind to tell them that is the same shape and size or else you will be SOL if they look it up and the size differs or shape is probably more likely to get noticed

Really, it was the first time I ever got such an extensive 3rd degree. I don't know if it was because they weren't busy, because I was alone, or if they just needed some cigars to smoke! With regard to going into Canada if you are over on your limit of booze or smokes just just have to pay duty, which still comes out cheaper than buying up there.
