The Cigar Smell

Do most of you also enjoy the smell of your stick as you are smoking it ?

As my cigar is burning I like to bring it under my nose to smell the fragrance of the smoke when just a little is coming off the stick. I feel it help me to enjoy the stick even more.

My favorite part of a cigar is the smell. In fact, I keep the smoke in my mouth most of the time and let the smoke off the end tickle my nose hairs ;).

A long-winded but funny story about the smell of cigars... When my daughter was 5, I took her on her first overnight camping trip. As we sat around the fire roasting marshmallows on the first night, she told me (as she had done many times before) to put out that nasty cigarette and smoke a cigar instead. That's hard to argue against, so I lit an Oliva Serie G maduro belicoso - and she said it smelled good. I asked her what it smelled like, and she said pineapples. On the 2nd and final night of the trip, she said that my DPG Cuban Classic smelled like coconuts. (She then climbed up on my lap, so I set it down and let it go out as she fell asleep, and finished it after I put her in the tent. Best damn cigar I've ever smoked, because of that right there.) Anyway, I figured I know where she's getting these ideas from - on our way to the state park, we'd hit the Dairy Queen drive through for a bite to eat, and I got a pina colada smoothie to wash it down with. Offering to share with her, I explained that it was a pineapple/coconut slushie, which was obviously a new concept to her - and with pineapples and coconuts fresh in her mind, that's what she answered with when I asked about the smell. (She was 5, so it wasn't that difficult to psychoanalyze.)

Now, here's where it gets really interesting - after returning home on day 3 and taking her back to her mom's house (as a single dad, that's something I have to do sometimes), I went home with our camping trip fresh in my mind, and smoked a La Aroma de Cuba - and it smelled like roasted marshmallows. To this day, I still get hints of roasted marshmallow when I light a LAdC.

So for me, there's nothing quite like the smell of a cigar, blending with the smell of a camp fire on a summer night, because of what it means to me. My cigars never smell so good, as when my kiddo is eating smores next to me or sleeping in the tent a few feet away and I get to revel in how grateful I am that I'm able to share such memory-making days with my kid, and celebrate the day's success with a good cigar.
