I recently emailed the staff at the Windsor LCDH for an updated price list. I live less than an hour away from Windsor and I go there once in a while. I figured while I was there I could make a handy-dandy purchase. But the prices, while I will not publish them here out of respect, were MORE THAN TWICE as much as online reputable vendors. Some boxes were approaching 3 times as much. On second hand I figured well it would be a great place to try some EL Limitada singles, some of the harder to find stuff. No way, some singles were approaching box prices for comparable cigars.

How do canadian LCDH's stay in business? The internet is everywhere.....

Not sure about that statement, but I agree that prices are high. How do they stay in business? There are tons of people who don't buy online and tons of tourists who can afford to buy on box while they're on vacation. I buy at a B&M on the rare occasion that I want to try a single; P2 for example. In that case, it saved me the time and money so that I could find something else.

Not sure about that statement? When I say comparable I may have been stretching depending on what you think of EL's...but the singles were in the 100 range just so ya know. I would go to the B&M for a single too, but why would I do that when I can buy singles online. I really don't see any argument to sustain why these places would stay in business. Anything you can do in a B&M you can do online except smoking of course lol. I'd rather buy twice as many cigars and just go to a herf lol.

Ah, but Canadian customs are notorious for busting Canadian citizens for ordering online (and avoiding the taxes).
Some of their pricing may be outright greed, but some of it is the tobacco taxes that Canada slaps on.
EDIT: Plus the fact that they are counting on tourist traffic. They are closest Canadian LCDH to the US. Just like some liquor stores near dry counties jack up the price on beer.

You make total sense to me. I can definitely see the reasoning behind jacking prices up...being so close to the U.S. I didn't know about Canadian customs being so hard, but I guess you could get around that if you really wanted to. What I don't get is how they really stay in business. I'm not in the cigar business so my education level in this matter is nil. But you would think that they would need a certain level of traffic, a certain amount of customers to stay in business. And I just can't imagine them having a huge customer base. I can see a customer base, but just not a very large one. I can really see tourists coming in, hell I could even see myself coming in once a year maybe to toke on a fine cuban in a nice atmosphere. I guess they must have a much larger customer base than I am imagining it to be.

I can't speak about the Windsor LCDH, but the one in Vancouver does fairly good business. They don't charge anywhere near $100 for an EL- closer to about $40 max. The LCDH is located on the busiest fashion street in town, so the tourist traffic is very high with mostly US customers buying singles, from what I've been told. Can't say what their business is doing now, but back in early 2000 an average day sold $2000 and a good day was $7000.

To put this into perspective, a Monte 4 costs roughly $10.50 wholesale. It retails for about $14 in Vancouver. Very few people are getting rich selling cigars here.

Maybe Windsor isn't that bad, I dunno. They charge 14 as well for a Monte 4. I guess I was just comparing it to an online place that I know is good...they sell them buy the box that equates out to less than 6 a piece. That particular vitola they don't sell by singles. The Windsor LCDH is located right in the middle of the popular bar district downtown there near the border of Michigan...so when you compare it to Vancouver I'm sure it does similar business. I'm not slamming them...I hope they do good. Anyone in this business, who is doing the consumer right I wish well.

Jason, I was in Windsor last night and I have to agree, those prices are outrageous. And now that the exchange rate worsens by the minute, I too wonder how they stay in business.

$850.00 + for a box of HCD DCs ??? $485.00
+ for Partagas Series D #4.
I can't handle dem prices .....

Whoa!

For a split second I thought Jason was back!

Those are outrageous prices!

But they do have something like a 100% tax up there in Canada.

LOL, I thought Jason was back too. I would never buy by the box in Canada or any high tax country. Though, I would be tempted just to get a couple singles.

If you ever get to Victoria, check out the smoke shop down in the tourist area. I think it is on Douglas or Government streets, right next to Murchee's Coffee and Munro's Books. They are a Habanos dealer and have a wonderful selection, albeit a bit expensive due to the incredibly high sin taxes in Canada. You can light up right in the shop. They are one of the oldest shops in the western part of the U.S. and Canada. They have one of the original, double-flame marble pillars. It has flame jets that burn upwards and downwards for pipe and cigar smokers. It is a really fun shop for the cigar aficionado.

Damn, thought Jason was back too!

Those prices are crazy, but hey, that is what a huge tax will do
