I'm better than I was at first...when I had only 8-10 sticks in the humi it was almost impossible to not try something new ROTT! Problem is, I'm getting into cc's and when something new comes in, it's very hard to not try one. Some have been amazing, and few not so much ROTT.

This all goes back to us being little kids. Who remembers getting a pack of baseball cards or a new toy at the store and tearing it open the second you get outside? Not even back to the car.
so with that I say rip the package like you have not smoked in a year and fire the bad boy up. Give in to your childish ways. Its a part of who we are.
btw... I smoke one rott too.

I'm in the same boat. Meager selection ~80 or so sticks, but all fresh. Other than 15-20 singles, the rest are four different kinds. Hate to smoke the singles, because I won't have that particular kind anymore. Only solution is to burn what I have, and order more. Man, I DO have a cigar problem. Lol

I never smoke ROTT anymore. I used to, but it never turned out good with my palate. Felt like a waste of a cigar. Minimum of 3 months rest.

Maybe it's because I seem to always have a previous ROTT ready to go as soon as new sticks show up, but I have no trouble at all waiting.

That said, I also have a few bottles of beer from 2003. Patience is my virtue, it seems.

I've experienced ROTT gut syndrome so many times, I just wont do it any longer. Its gotta go in the humi for a month before I even look at it.

I feel it's best to at least let them acclimate to the environment you're used to smoking your sticks from. For a while my pallet was tuned to my BMs environment and everything I bought online tasted like garbage. Soon after I stocked my humi with enough online purchase to keep from the BM, I noticed the BM smokes tasted like garbage.

So I say, let the smokes settle for a week or so, then they are ready.

I wonder how much of this is science and how much is superstition/wives tale. Have we ever had one of the manufacturers comment on this? Maybe @ssaka or @JonHuber could shed some light.
I can assure you it is not superstition. Just recently I smoked a Triunfador with only about a week in the humi against my better judgement. Not enough time. Burn was wonky, tunneling, everything short of cracking on me. Let the other four rest for a couple of months and smoked another. Perfectly straight and even burn.

Every now and then I'll smoke something ROTM (right out the mailbox:woot:) and I regret it completely and go back to sticking by my methods.

I may be confused. When we are talking about "ROTT", is that only referring to new purchases directly from the manufacturer?

I interpreted ROTT to mean anything that is new to you. I've been told that even a couple of days in the mail should equal time in the humi.

I've always taken it to mean Right Off The Truck, or just after it's been delivered to your door. Probably more a concern in cold weather, as the cigars are often inevitably subjected to temperature changes during shipping, that can allegedly affect their general well-being for a short while, until they've had some time to rest. Makes sense, as tobaccos is grown (and cigars are created) in warmer climates. Put them on a USPS truck in the winter, and they're out of their natural climate for a while.

I've also read that much of it has to do with the idea that many large retailers who sell online, might store their cigars at higher than optimal Rh, so that they don't dry out in transit, or while waiting to be smoked if they've been shipped to someone who isn't a cigar fanatic and doesn't have an optimal setup for storing/aging them. It's a sound idea, doing what they can to make sure that their cigars are in the best condition when they're smoked. To what extent this is actually the case, I have no idea... Although I suspect there are many who will say that they often find their cigars to be a little on the wet side when they first arrive.

Just my .02
