Has anyone taking the SC motorcycle test? My permit ran out, I don't think I ready to take the riding test, but they are making me try the riding test before I can get another permit. I've read up on it but I'm looking for first hand experience. Any tips? Thanks

Dale

Oh I ride a Honda 1100 ace if that matters.

I was nervous about it, put off and renewed permit for 2-3yrs and then figured if I've been riding for this long, I could take the test.

Put my foot down once in the slalom, and got a point for no signal (malfunction-fixed now), but other than that I passed.

Some people prefer to rent or borrow a 250 to test on, but if its an unfamiliar bike, might not be in your best interest. I did it on my 78 GS750 Which doesn't maneuver very well

Not sure about your laws but out on the west coast (in all three coastal states) you can take a MSF (motorcycle safety foundation) class and get tested by them vs. just having to the DMV.

I've only really have about 5 months of riding time. I haven't ridin in over 3 months dew to weather and work. In SC the DMV is the one that test you. And trust me they know nothing about bikes or how to ride them, just what their manual says.
What really pisses me of is in order to take the test I have get someone else with a lisence to ride MY bike up there so I can take this it! Because my permit went out. I hate the DMV...

Same for Texas. Went, and took the MSF course, (great intro to street riding as my class it was pouring all 3 days) lol, after the class you go and take the written test, and you're good to go. Definitely would recommend the MSF course!

I took the South Carolina test a few years back. There is no written test. They have implemented quite a bit of speed in the test. Quick acceleration / deceleration with maneuvers. You do not have to take the MSF course, but they will give your bike a safety check / inspection even tho it is not required for a tag so make sure that everything is in proper working order. They do the math for distance/time traveled to make sure you hit the appropriate speeds. Even scraping and throwing sparks I didn't get a high enough speed in the slalom with my Harley and I was gigged for it, but I still passed the test. If you have any questions just ask. ;)

PS: I took the test with a HIGHLY modified stage 3 1250 Sportster................

Just ride it there yourself and park where they wont see you from the window or door and tell them someone drove it there and you drove their vehicle, but they had to leave. If you fail the test, just shoot them the finger and ride off screaming "I regret nothing!"

Practice low speed Manuvers you don't do much at road speeds for m test. Practice low speed turns starting then stopping at certain spots on pavement. Remember er very low speeds turn handles bars slightly in opposite direction you want to go. It will lean bike in the right direction. Also at very low spreads lean the bike not the body. You will be fine!

I've been riding for about 20 years, some of those have been, uummmm, how shal I say it, legal. Here in South Dakota, a pretty motorcycle friendly state, you can pass the motorcycle safety course and get your license. Or you can do the computer based test then do your road test. In my experience, the folks doing the road test really don't have any biking experience so to main things they look for are speed and staying on the correct side of the road. Tipping over would also be seen as bad. Our road tests are exactly that, they ask you to strap a speaker to your jacket for instructions, then follow in a car while you ride around the local streets. The road tests are easy! If you strictly want a license, that's the way to go. The safety courses, however, will truly teach you to be a safe and skilled rider. So I guess, if you were here, I would say do the test to get the license, but the find the time to do the safety courses. I can pretty much point out every hockey puck on the road who is riding to be cool and those who enjoy the skill and freedom involved.
I feel the need to say that riding "in formation" does not imply the formation of a swarm of bees.
