His name was Al Schroeder. He worked on the Atlas II missile system. He also designed the cooling system for the Apollo lunar module. He designed the bomb bay baffles and the nose landing gear for the B-1. He said he was least proud of the B-1 work because they rushed it to make Reagan happy.

Several of they guys I work with worked with the B-1 in the Air Force. My boss was the senior NCO in charge of the bomb loaders when they brought it online. He told me once that during the Clinton years, they blew a tire landing at an air show in the midwest. They had no spares in the entire Air Force due to budget cuts so they had to run out to the flight line, jack a plane up, remove the tire and fly it to the disabled plane so that they could get it home.

Yup...I can read..really I promise...I read that damned paragraph twice, and missed that statement both times...

Problem: Test flight OK, except autoland very rough.
Solution: Autoland not installed on this aircraft.

I LOVE that one! I've gotten this i emails several times....The email I've got is a lot logner, I'll try and dig it up for you guys..

I doubt one could forget to lower the landing gear. That's putting all there lives in jeopardy at the same time. Nice pics Drew!

Sometimes some stupid things happen. Although you would think the plane would set off some type of alarm that the gear is not down :dunno:

We lost one of those out of Dyess because they set the terrain following autopilot at sea level and flew into a hill.

They crashed another one right outside of town due to a bird strike.

Accidents and mishaps of that nature are usually a series of minor errors culminating in a catastrophic error. Usually they (NTSB or similar) find that if anyone of those minor errors had not occurred, then the entire accident could/would have been avoided. Years ago an Eastern DC-10 crashed in the Everglades as a result of all three on the flight deck trying to determine whether a light bulb was burned out or a fuse was blown. Nobody remembered to fly the plane. ATC asked if everything was okay instead of saying say altitude. But hopefully we learn from our previous mistakes.

Another guy I work with used to work for NATCA and he says that the FAA always makes decisions regarding flight safety with the economic impact to the airline industry as a major consideration.

In other words they weigh the number of lives lost against the financial cost.
