How do you age your cigars? Don't you just want to smoke them?

I have a big problem. I'm a little impatient. If I buy a cigar, I wanna just smoke it right then. How do you keep yourself from smoking them?

Maybe its because I only have about 5 cigars but I usually end up smoking 2-3 in a weekend.

Is it that you just have so many cigars in your humidors that by the time you get around to smoking them, time has passed or do you intentionally have some that your want to keep as treasure?

It's the secret to life. Moderation!

But some of these slope sliders do just have FAR TOO MANY, which in reality is not enough. o_O

A good trick is to watch the sales, save your penny's and when an unbelievable sale comes around buy 2 boxes. That way you can put one away and still smoke 25 at your own pace, based on your consumption a 25 box will last you 2 months (y)

You could always limit yourself to 1 Saturday and 1 Sunday or you could try all the cheap and cheerfuls until you find something more affordable you like.

I do feel your pain brother but one thing about love and addiction is it will always find a way!

Or you could just buy aged cigars :cigar:

Another solution is some companies offer online humidors, personally I love taking care of them, looking at them, smelling them so I would never go that route but if you really can't trust yourself it may be a viable solution.

PS what's your address? :angelic:

Once you start making purchases they do start to accumulate. If you are feeling like smoking ROTT (right off the truck) do so, but what you can do is purchase a 5 pack smoke one instantly, wait a month or 2 and smoke another, 6, months, 1 year (do you like em still, buy more), 2 years. Now that is not exactly age per say, but it is a good amount of rest by the time you get to the last one. Obviously at the rate your smoking you're gonna need more than just 1 5 pack. Also browse the forum see what others are smoking and what they are saying about them, peruse reviews, and if something sounds like you may like it go for it. I think the best advice I can give to you (if you're new to this, which it sounds like it is), don't hop all over every deal you see on any given online retailer website and spending money on cheap boxes of whatever solely because it was cheap and they're was a hefty MSRP right next to it, you kinda tend to grow out of that stuff palate wise fast if it did ever interest you and then you got a bunch of cigars you never plan on smoking. If you stick around for a while the names of certain brands will come across more than a few times for good or bad, but usually good and that can give you some direction. I know this post kind of leads away from your question but all in all it boils down to buying, buying more than you can smoke instantly. Buy quality not quantity but make sure the quality smokes are being massed up in quantity.

If you are a new to cigars, I wouldn't worry about aging cigars at this point. I suggest trying a variety of cigars, sizes, wrappers and strength to see what you prefer. Over the first year or two your palate will develop and change, so don't buy a bunch just yet, as they will likely be things you won't desire smoking in the future.

Just smoke a variety and keep a few notes on what you like or dislike about what you smoke. Then you can begin to pinpoint things to look for in making cigar purchases down the road.

Also, again if you are new to cigars, read, learn and ask questions on how to properly keep your cigars. Proper storage and humidification will go a long ways towards cigar smoking enjoyment and eventual aging.

Keep in mind not all cigar will improve with age and some will become flavorless.

+1 to what everyone else said. If you want cigars to age, just buy more than you smoke and put them out of sight for as long as you want to age them.

I was like you when I started out. Seemed like I had no idea how anybody could possibly just put away some cigars and "forget" about them. As I started purchasing more it became easier to see but I still had a hard time leaving alone my favorite sticks. I currently have a 3 humidor set up.
A big one for display and smoking. A second for overflow. And a third for stashing. That one sets underneath another so I can watch humidity but never open. When I make a purchase no matter what it is I put one in that and forget it. Honestly I can not remember what all is in there right now.
Good luck on figuring out what works for you.
Oh, and do not buy boxes until you are positive you will really enjoy them. Smoke at least a 5er over a month or two. If you still enjoy them consider the box.

I think this hobby is a natural progression. I started off with a cheap 20 count Thompson. Then bought a 150 count glass top. Then added a 75 count display case. At that point, I then bought a (18 bottle?) wineador and sold the 75 count. Now, I have the 20 count for dog rockets and infused (the rockets need help:D), the 150 count, and the wineador.

Keep in mind this process took place over about 9 years, but it's an indication of buying more than you can smoke which naturally leads to being able to age cigars. I think this is what most guys do, which also leads to bombing since we just have too many for our own personal consumption.

On a side note, in my opinion, don't get to wrapped up on aging. I think a good couple of months in a humidor can do wonders, but I've had some that have been in there for two years and didn't notice that much of a difference vs one that was in there for two months.

Alot of good info here. You can find out alot of the newer & more popular cigars just by reading through the threads here. But there are still alot of good cigars out there that fly under the radar, or have been around a while and dont get mentioned very often. If you are curious about certain brands or lines, dont be afraid to ask. The brothers here are always glad to help out anyway they can...

can turn into a devilish freefall <-- see what i did there.
very pun-ny!

Depends on cigars. Most of what I have smoke better after a year or two.

Once you invest in some larger-scale storage (a cigar cooler), you can quickly accumulate a great selection of cigars for aging. Here's mine: http://www.homedepot.com/p/Whynter-Stainless-Steel-2-5-cu-ft-Cigar-Cooler-Humidor-CHC-251S/205392987 . Your rate of accumulation is determined by what percentage of your disposable income you want to spend on sticks (this is one aspect of "BOTL math.") :cigar: One thing I've learned, based on how many guys jump off that cliff, is that all roads lead to the wineador! Buy one as soon as you can reasonably afford to. Maybe find a used one on Craigslist or eBay. Trust me, you'll be glad you did. I've got a ton of cigars just sitting and aging right now.
