If i could get ahold of every newbie, I would advise they go;
-Tupperware or pelican-type case
-upgrade to a 28qt cooler (Walmart or Amazon for like $25) for beginning a stash
-when that's maxed, upgrade to a wine cooler (if looks are important) or larger cooler (if they aren't).

Would save so much expense and hassle. Wish someone woulda told me early on!
I would have preferred not to have gotten a cooler so soon, but even with my Pelican in the coolest part of the house my cigars were hitting 75 degrees, and it's not even summer yet.

I spent plenty on cheap, $hitty humidors before actually getting a nice one. Now they're in my room somewhere collecting plenty of dust on them. I wish I was here first because I'd probably have a wineador by now with the shelves and drawers.

We always get a kick when newbs ask these questions....we know what the future holds and we've all been there. Cigars are like crack....once you start you're pretty much addicted and then comes all of the buying...the coolers, wineadors, late night buying binges on the auctions and then hiding the orders when USPS or UPS delivers....then there's the wives who stand there with their hands on their hips...."Another order of cigars...again?" Here's my guide to safely deal with the addiction:

1. Shop for cigars from work ....never at home
2. Either have your cigars delivered to a work address or a friends...I have my delivery people call me when they have deliverys to make at my house....I drive up the hill..give em a Starbucks card and the order gets put into my car and then snuck in when the wife is not home and put into my cooler.
3. If you get busted then prepare for a duel....she buys purses, shoes, makeup, hair/nails appointments and clothes up the wahzoo.....use this for leverage as you don't ask for much in life except to help deal with all of the responsibilities of life...the home...the financial worries, etc. and cigars help calm your nerves and you're actually smoking cigars for her....at the end of the day because that is how much you love her....( rub a portion of an onion under your eyes when shes not looking as a little streaming tear works wonders.) That is all....Roger Wilcko!

I moved to a wineafor after my ac died. Had to take my humidor to a friends house. If your house stays cool year round. Go Coolidor. I'f not it's hard to beat the value of a winador. With that said I agree with what has been said. An igloo is the least expensive way to move to more storage. 20-30 in the container and under 10 for the 100% order free silica kitty litter. Add some Spanish cedar and a hydrometer. And your golden.

If you do decide to go wineador. Look for scratch and dents as well as Craig's list. These are new and usually much cheaper

@KookaRocha, my temps are way high in my house here in Philly, which has forced me to buy an Igloo cooler.
Currently it's on the last stage of being aired out for use, then I'll toss in some boxes and fill them up with loose sticks. Gets too hot? I'll have an ice pak wrapped in a sock and taped to the inside of the lid. I'm tossing in 5 Boveda's as well as using a humidor sponge to keep the humidity coming.
I'm hoping that this works! There is a wise member on here that uses a similar method and gets great results.
Good luck man.

I started with a similar case and used that for several years exclusively. I never really noticed problems with my cigars, but then again, I was a noob. I received a 50 count humi as a wedding gift 3.5 years ago, and filled that sucker up about 6 months later. So I sprung for a 250 count humidor. Then I filled that thing up this winter. So my 48 qt cooler that I asked for Christmas? That's my main storage. Besides looks and cost, the real question between the coolidor and the wineador is do you need to keep your cigars at a different temp from your house? My humis are down in my basement, which is rarely above 60 degrees. If anything, I need it to be warmer down there, but I'm not doing that.

Good luck man.
I considered doing the ice pack thing, but I'm a vagabond at the moment and always moving. For me, it just didn't seem feasible to constantly be changing the ice pack. Also, I'm not concerned about ever stopping smoking, I've been smoking cigars for 15 years, I just never really went beyond the realm of Davidoffs. So, to me, I figured why bother with the middle steps. In fact I was going to go straight for an 18-28 bottle plus wineador but didn't want to spend so much on new and I had no luck finding used.

Or I could have totally over thought this thanks to you bunch of enablers. Oh well, wife's in Korea.

Good points man. I've heard the pack can maintain coolness in there for about a month or more. I'll let you know!
Since becoming a member here in February, I've gone from a small tupperware, large tupperware, humidor, and now a cooler.
One day I'll have the loot for a wineador, but until then it's the cooler route.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I'd rather just skip the cooler and go for the wineador as I'm sure I'd end up there somewhere down the road anyways. I'd prefer to not have a cooler just laying around in the man cave anyways.
I live in Houston, temps are never constant. The only thing that is for sure is that the weather in constantly changing.
A/C gets turned up to 80 in the house while we are at work, do the cooler would most likely get too hot anyways.
I already have my eye on a few wine coolers on Craigslist. Just trying to find one with all the features I want.
Thankfully my wife isn't that kind I have to hide purchase from. We are both adults and do whatever we please, within reason. Now if I start buying guns like Cigars, then I may have a problem.

Remember to avoid the units with Condensers. They wreak havoc on the RH. You want a unit with a thermoelectric cooling mechanism.

I find myself in very much the same position in many ways. Good wife that is cool with my budget, maxed out tiny tupperdore........and a wine fridge currently en route to my house. I decided the coolador option is really not an option at all, given our temps here in Houston. I didn't find anything I liked on craigslist after a couple of weeks, but that doesn't mean you won't! I ended up getting a great deal on a scratch and dent Newair 121 at air & water. Found a 20% off code I'm happy to share if you decide to go that route.
