I also can't just will my cigars lit but I have taken to the light then cut method. I can't say it's made a huge difference on some sticks and has made a world of difference on others. At the very least in changes the first few puffs. It's become second nature now.

It's important to me to make sure my draw is fine before I light the cigar. If I have to "work on" a cigar to fix the draw, I much rather it not be lit.
My lighting method accomplishes about the same thing as this light 1st/cut 2nd method. I light my cigar completely from toasting and I never pull the flame through the cigar (i.e. take a puff while the flame is on the foot). I completely light the cigar from the flame (getting a nice red cherry on the foot) and then I put my lighter away (and maybe wait 10 or so more seconds) and then I start smoking. No more char taste on my early puffs.

Keeping the cap on (or a finger over the cap end) ensures that char smoke won't travel up and through the cigar before your first draw. Purging before drawing can help eliminate this as well.
When I first started reading this thread, I couldn't imagine that it would make a difference. But now I'll have to try it to see if I can tell a difference. If I can't, it would just mean that *I* can't tell a difference, not that there isn't one..

Finally tried this tonight with a CH JD Howard robusto. I wish I'd used a stick I am more familiar with to make a better comparison. It was a pretty easy process with my Bugatti B1, but I got quite a bit of tar buildup pretty quickly. I am gonna assume that was coincidence. I'll try again with something I know better.
