Just fired up a Nica Rustica and am wondering...what's the purpose of a closed-foot? Is it just an affectation, or is it intended to make lighting easier? My experience is that they do light a bit easier, but tend to burn unevenly.

From my perspective, and resulting into uneven burn, the gymnastics required to light them up ain't called 'easy'

I cut my cigar once it's lit so there's no blast.

From a nose perspective you can't smell the foot as its all wrapper.

I guess it's all about looks. What about shaggy foot?

"wrapper blast"...

the first few puffs, you get the flavor of the wrapper, almost exclusively..

(and it looks cool :) )....
I absolutely agree with this statement. I like the idea of being to smoke the wrapper by itself to see what flavors from the cigar comes from the wrapper. I wish more companies would do closed foots.

its a trade off
open larger ring feet lends to nice clean lightups / large rings such as the figurados and closed foot have a greater quality aging potential due to the internal gases inability to exchange with outside environment i.e. less oxidation.

In the Cigar Biz sometimes they just want to remake a portion of the cigar to get people talking about it.....the shaggy foot does nothing to enhance the cigar...in the same way that the head with Torpedo, Belicoso, etc. does nothing "extra" to the cigar. You put fire to the tobacco and that's it. Doesn't change the chemistry at all nor does it enhance anything else even though people swear about how it changes the flow of smoke being drawn through cigar itself....if anything it might change the volume but you can change this by cutting more off the head and get a ton of smoke.

For me, initially I get the tasty flavor of the wrapper without any influence of the binder/filler. Love that. It also makes for an easy light.

edit: It is also interesting to smoke a shaggy foot cigar where you initially taste binder/filler without the influence of the wrapper.
