I have been smoking for years and have personal experience with most types of storage types/methods. From sm/md desktops to coolers and even Tupperware. I have a Coleman 150qt extreme, which at one time was 75% full. Along with the several 100-250ct desktops I keep stocked with to be smoked items. Needless to say I have a fairly extensive reserve of personal experience to draw from.
With that being said I have recently been reading about wine coolers and the like to control temp and also store large quantities. Though they are probably the best most cost effective method and they work well when properly set up and maintained, I believe that there is a fairly decent chance that over say 3-5 years there is likely to be at least some hiccups.
It is my opinion that I have a better method for really long term storage which is pretty cost effective and absolutely foolproof, and only requires about 20 minutes per year in maintaining.
I am writing this for the newer members who are always asking the questions about temporary and long term storage as this will work for both.
You will need Spanish cedar boxes boveda packs and large size thicker freezer bags. Place a box full of cigars (cellophane removed) and place a boveda or two in the bag with the box of cigars let 80% of the extra air out of the bag and seal. With 2 69% bovedas you will get a year and a half storage time for that box. Simply open the bag to circulate the air once every 2-3 months and that's it folks. You can leave the cellos on and even skip the cigar box altogether but for best results the way I have described is preferable. I have used this method on my most expensive shit that, even though the cooler was functioning without issue I still didn't trust for these full boxes (5-600$ retail for 2 to 3 of these boxes. And there you have it folks. I have smoked cigars stored this way with 1500 days on them and they were incredible. It may be beneficial to rotate cigars you intend to smoke within 3/6 months back into your desktop to round out the last 100+ days in a reg box. CI sells 20 count packs of boveda for like 59.99 so this method is pretty cheap and for those who want long term 3-5 year aging you want relatively undisturbed environment which the coolers really aren't ideal for.
