So like many others I'm looking to try a pipe. I've never smoked one before so I'm to give it a shot for about as cheap as possible. I looked at the corn cob pipes and for 4-8$ it wouldn't kill me if i didn't like it. So which pipe should i get? Mini, bent, straight, hardwood, filtered/unfiltered? Thanks guys.

I would say get whatever feels right in you hand/mouth. I prefer the one with a wider mouth piece, easier to hold with no hands IMHO
Hey bro this is the one I started with: http://www.pipesandcigars.com/mimecogest.html it's the corn cob country gentleman in case the link doesn't work, they all come with the medico filter which is good for a couple bowls then needs replaced but most will tell you just to take the filter out. Really I would go look at a couple in person and see how they feel in your hand I smoke both bent and straight just depends on the mood and you can't go wrong with a good corn-cob pipe. Learning the technique for packing and lighting is prob where it takes the most talent but once you get it down pipe smoking is very enjoyable especially in the winter time.

Cool, thanks for all the info. I ordered a MM diplomat, should be here today or tomorrow. Also got a 50g tin of dunhill 965 for tobacco, a 3-1 tool and some cleaners.
Ive read about taking down the wood plug in the bottom. Ill have to clean that up a bit. A couple mins with a good sharp countersink should take care of it.
I'm excited about it, seems like another really enjoyable hobby to accompany cigar smoking.

So I'm almost done with my first ever bowl of pipe tobacco. Dunhill 956. Few observations which are most likely wrong because I'm a uber newb at this.
The flavor and smoke is much more mild. It doesn't have the pallet coating intensity of a cigar
There's not nearly as much smoke as a cigar.(most likely I'm not really lighting properly)
The juice you get from smoking to fast is really really not very pleasant

I know lots of people like cobs, but I've never been a fan. I don't like the plastic feel/taste in my mouth and I think they tend to burn hot. I think, though, that if you're enjoying a cob you'll find much more pleasure when you switch to a briar.

3) cigars will punish you for getting greedy, but pipes will brutalize you on it!
this is why i never really got into pipe, but good on you, and good luck on the learning journey! know quite a few brothers on here smoke pipe, and would gladly offer assistance if asked.
Just ordered a savinelli 320 rustic. The cob does feel a little bit like a toy. The one i got was bored a little off center, the bowl is thin on the side where the stem was put in. It seems to get really hot on just that side. For 8$ I'm not complaining.
Now that you have had it a couple weeks, how do you like the Savinelli?

Didnt think it was worth a new thread so I'll just derail this one a bit. Cob pipes seem a little more raw then my briars. My question is should you still dip pipe cleaners in alcohol to clean a cob as i do my briars? Seems like it may damage or just soak in alot more?
I know @The Munt just completed it, but for you guys thinking about trying pipes, get in on the pipe newbie trade and take it from there.
Personally, I love my cob. At first, it was in my collection for show because well, I felt weird smoking from a corn cob. After enjoying a bowl or two through it the cob is now a part of my rotation. In fact, hopefully giving it a good workout in the next few days.
Also, I've read that you can smoke cobs more frequently than briars in their specific rest periods.

I have one of these. The stems are flimsy and cheap which can be a frustration, but it smokes just as well as any other.
Where has @javajunkie been?
