So I know a common thing people do is search local smoke shops whenever they're traveling around to search for rare gems that might randomly and luckily be there. Well I'll be heading up to IL to visit my older bro for his sons christening soon, and I saw after getting curious that there are a pretty large number of shops around where he lives.

that means I'll def. be going around the shops to look for stuff, but as a noob I don't really know what I should be looking for tbh. I have a few things in mind like some of the rarer fuente sticks (destino al siglo, forbidden x, don carlos anniversary) some of the Tats that have the blue/red/yellow/white bands(RC233), angels anvils, TAAs, etc. ..but really I haven't much of a clue of other stuff that's good too look for.

any suggestions? would be nice if anyone knew of some great rarer stuff that doesn't cost 20+ bucks a stick as well lol.

anything specific or just aged versions of the stuff you can find like at small batch? other than the main stuff I don't know if there are any other vitolas that have been released in limited runs or anything like that.

also as a side note, i had an illusione rothschild for the first time today? in the spectrum of all cigars are they considered peppery? because it was one of the pepperiest sticks I've smoked to date?

I would look for RomaCraft sticks that don't have bands. Budget friendly but those are getting close to 2yrs old now and some of my favorites.

Four kicks mule kicks... unless @mdwest bought them all.

Also herrera esteli lancersos from 2014 are tits-out awesome.

Another Chicago treat is the Tesa stuff. Not too easy to comeby out west, so I grab it when I can.

Any Don Pepin Garcias without the ribbon on the foot are tastier than the newer stuff with the ribbons

Cain F Lanceros in the tubes are rad, too.

Any Tatuaje monster # less than 7.

That's all I can think of now.

Find cigars that you like or are made by someone you enjoy. I always look at the bottom of Tat Boxes to see the date, never know, they may have an old box. I enjoy trying stuff that was made by Pepin or Casa Fernandez. I pretty much use the knowledge I've gained here and what people are smoking in "Today's Smoke" when I'm out and about. I've found that some of the people that work in cigar shops aren't "cigar geeks" like most of us are. A lot of the time we know more about brands and the tobacco used than they do. I asked one of the guys at a cigar shop I was in recently what wrapper was used on a particular cigar, he didn't know so he asked another guy who told him "It's Nicaraugan". Turns out it's an Ecuadorian Sumatra. A gem to one person might be a dog rocket to another.

If you're going through Champaign, Jon's Pipe Shop had Opus X and Opus Lost City 3 or 4 weeks ago. Not sure that those classify as HTF or rare, but are certainly sought after. He keeps the "good stuff" behind the counter, so you might need to ask what he has.
