Just finished up what I could of a Joya de Nicaragua Antaño 1970 in Belicoso. Usually one of my all time favorites. I had a bad feeling I was in for a stinker when I bought it a few days ago, but the smoke was a great one.
I'm about 400 miles from home with the wife and 3 month old daughter. We got here last Wednesday for my daughter's fourth surgery, to remove pieces of her skull due to premature fusion of a couple of the bones. I lost track of how many people heard what she was having done and said that it sounds bad, but it's really super easy and the neurosurgeon is one of the best, he already did 2 of her previous surgeries. Well, you know when you go in for a medical procedure and the doc tells you a list of rare things that never happen but he has to tell you anyway? They happened. What started as a quick trip with an overnight stay for observation has turned into 4 days in the intensive care unit and 2 more in the regular pediatrics unit. When I had to make a run for supplies, I passed a liquor store in a strip mall advertising that they sell premium cigars so I figured I'd see if anything struck my fancy. The JdN caught my attention but as soon as I slid the glass door open, a wave of mist came pouring out. I could even here the electronic humidity system still running. I almost passed on the purchase, but I figured by the time I was able to enjoy it there should have been enough time to dry out. We got discharged late this afternoon, and having no real desire to set out back home tonight, we chose to stay in town one last night and hit the road in the AM. I figured I'd give the stick a go. Still ridiculously over humidified! Darn near impossible to keep burning, crazy tunneling, horrid flavor, but I smoked it down anyway, and I enjoyed it. This was my celebration that my daughter was finished with the last planned surgery for as far as we can figure. She still has a bit of recovery left at home, and life long challenges that we'll deal with as they come, but there was no way I'd let crappy storage conditions spoil our moment of triumph.
Ever have a crapy cigar but still enjoyed the reasons for the smoke?
