Im new to trying bourbons/whiskeys neat or on the rocks. I've had a many mixed and what not but would like to start trying some straight. What would you consider a good recommendation for what you could consider a beginner. So far I've had Makers 46, Wild Turkey 101, and McClellands 12yr.

I prefer things that are sweet. Not a big fan of woody tastes.

Buffalo Trace and Four Roses are good starting points at good prices. Bulleit as well. I mean there are so many out there. I prefer Woodford Reserve over Makers for a couple more bucks than the BT and FR. Eagle Rare I like. Damn I could go on and on.

I too would suggest Woodford Reserve. Very smooth. Try tasting it neat, then add a drop of water and see how the nose opens up and try another taste. Buffalo Trace is also nice at lower price point, I enjoy it regularly.

Bourbon is a lot like cigars. Too many options all over the price spectrum. All with slightly different flavors. Just sample man.

Jack Daniels single barrel is mighty tasty too. But that here in NY runs $60-$80 depending on where you go. So might be cheaper or around same elsewhere. Like @RacFocus said just sample. I'm sure you can find smaller bottles or "nips" of plenty of bourbons and whiskey. Don't commit to the bigger bottles until you know what you like and don't like.

I third woodford reserve for a new.. It's nice and smooth.. I can polish a bottle and not realize it. Lol. I'd definitely drink it neat
When I was younger I polished a bottle in an evening. Needless to say that ended with me praying to the porcelain gods.

It's a bit pricey but my favorite scotch whiskey is Oban.

Looks like I'll need to try woodford though...
