Recently the GF and I were talking and she mentioned that she wanted to get a new jewelry box. Being the holidays I figured that would make a perfect gift. As I stated to look at boxes I thought looked nice I quickly realized that I have expensive tastes as to what I wouldn't object to sitting on our dresser.

While I was browsing I saw a picture where a guy took an old Fuente box and make a really simple jewelry box and the spark ignited in my head. I know I wouldn't mind looking at a cigar box and already had the perfect box to use.

The Montecristo 80th box was the perfect box to use because it has 2 pull out trays that already have dividers. Not a lot of work will be needed to complete this project.

The box has a piece of wood in the bottom (that I later found out was stapled in) so that the cigars angle from the back of the box down. This is for display purpose and will be removed to give room in the lid.

The plan was to remove a few dividers, line with felt, rig up something for ring slots and create a pocket in the lid and add hooks for necklaces. I found 3/4" x 1/4" weather stripping left the right amount of room for adding felt for rings.

I started by removing the glued in dividers and sanding with the drimmel. I also had to use the drimmel to remove the piece of wood in the bottom because it was stapled in. Got that all cleaned up and on to cutting the felt.

After having to re-cut a few pieces of felt due to not being a very crafty guy I was able line the drawers, inside the box and the bottom of the box so it won't scratch the counter it sits on. For the ring slots I cut about a 4" piece and folded it in half and put it between the weather stripping and then "tucked" it over and behind the weather stripping. Was pretty easy although it doesn't leave much room for a ring with a thicker band. I was able to get my mom to help me out and sew the " pocket" for the lid that will hold necklaces.

All in all, about a 2 hour project and hopefully the GF will like it. Here is the final result with Moms rings in it.

Looks great Craig, are you planning on putting the felt inside the lid like we talk about the other day as well? Clever idea taking a couple slats out of one section, I'm sure she will love it!

Kind Of hard to see but in the last picture there is felt inside the lid and mom sewed in an elastic pocket as well. There are 8 hooks in the top for necklaces to hang.

That is way cool....... may have to steal this idea
Please do, none of us would mind a cigar box sitting on the dresser. Finding the right box makes it a very easy project and most of the felt had an adhesive backing. I only had to glue the piece in the lid because of the pocket which honestly could have been skipped all together.
