What's up fellas!
Being so new to the cigar world, I thought it would be cool to get a thread going of sticks everybody should try at least one time. Obviously everyone's preference is a bit different but it would be helpful for anyone looking for something new to try without taking a shot in the dark, or basing their decision solely off of hype.

Off the top of my head I'd say RP Vintage 1992, Davidoff Nic, Ashton Aged Maduro, Perdomo Double Aged, La Aroma de Cuba Mi Amor, and La Aurora Preferido Connecticut. Those are some of my favorites at least

far easier to give you a list of cigars not worth wasting your money on (all hype.. or just generally accepted as sub par), than giving you a list of cigars worth trying at least once..

there are literally thousands of worthy options for a "at least once" list out there.. and everyones tastes are different..

My recommendation... while youre "new" buy a lot of singles.. do a lot of trading.. etc.. keep trying new things all the time..

once you find something you think you really like.. get another one.. and try it again in a few weeks (confirm that you really like it).. then start buying in bulk (cheaper to buy 5vers or boxes than it is to buy singles)..

After a year youll have your own "top 10" list of things that you think are great...

After 2 years.. youll notice that list changing dramatically... (keep trying stuff.. and youre going to keep finding new stuff you like better.. and things you used to like.. will start to fall off the list..)..

After 3 years.. the list will change quite a bit again..

MAYBE after 4 or 5 years.. youll have "figured it out" and your list will start to stabilize :D

Try everything! The "trial and error" aspect of being new can be challenging, but it can be fun too. I say start cheap, and work your way up from there. As you go, you'll get a better feel for what new sticks you are more likely to enjoy and be able to expand your horizons accordingly.

Thanks for the advice gentlemen. I've basically been doing what you all suggested, I've been trying something new every day.

Stay far away from Tatuaje, Crowned Heads and Liga...leaves more for me! Lol

But seriously, once you find something you like, figure out what wrapper, binder and filler it's comprised of. This will help you narrow down what regions/tobacco you like. I've figured out that I love Brazilian MF and Mexican SA. So anytime I see a new cigar with either of those in it, from a company I trust, I'll bite.

That's definitely something I should start being more aware of!

The biggest problem with being a noob is you're having to smoke almost everything ROTT. Stored cigars will change flavor in a few months to a year. Sometimes substantially. So the stuff you think is crap right now might actually be good if you could have only stuck it in a humidor for a while.

So I'd stock up on a lot of stuff early. Some youll like, some you wont, and then you'll be able to revisit those decisions after several months and see if they're the same.

Sage advice. I think it helps to identify some sticks you enjoy and then ask about similar sticks. Be sure to ask a lot around here. People are very helpful.

"Cheap" can be a relative term, too. I think, up to a certain point, you may be better off paying twice as much and smoking half as much, if you get my drift. I sometimes wonder how many people try a cheap, horrible, harsh cigar and then never come back.

Now, this is just my opinion...

There are exceptions, but not many sub $5 cigars are worth smoking. Now, once you get into the $5-8 range, there are tons of good sticks to pick from. So, what I'm getting at is I wish I had not bought sticks just because they were cheap. I should have bought half as many at twice the price point. My early days would have been much more pleasant.

Now, what to do with all those "error" sticks left from trial and error. :cigar:

Man. Here's the problem: try it once and it may suck. Try it again a few years in, with a more experienced palate, and better storage conditions and you'll have a completely different experience.

For new guys, I don't know that there is a list to start with. Personally, I would recommend new guys look at the "Best Cigar under $5" thread or the "favorite _____" type threads and work on developing a palate first.

Even with the qualification, I think that's a pretty strange statement. There are tons of decent sticks under $5 (online) out there. Especially at auction.

Part of the fun of the hobby is finding sticks that hit your flavor profile yet don't cost an arm and a leg.

Lot of good advice right there, if you follow it you won't go wrong.

My comment was very general. I was referring to what you can typically find at "regular" prices from Famous, Small Batch, etc. My experience has been that sub $5 sticks leave me disappointed far more often than $5+ sticks and they are sometimes flat out unsmokable. Again, just my experience. There there are great cigars under $5. Genesis The Project and 5 Vegas A are two that I like and would recommend.

Auctions are a different beast. Prices are inconsistent and what you are looking for may not be available when you go looking. Yes, you can find great stuff at auction for reduced prices. That may put the $5-$8 in the sub $5 category, but they are not really sub $5 sticks when you see what they are being sold for by retail establishments. I should have clarified.

In personal retrospect, I wish I had tried more $6 sticks than $3 sticks when I was starting. I went through some horrible crap.

Try everything and anything at least once. You'll develop your palate to what you like and don't like in the cigar. And it's amazing how some cigars will change for the better with some rest over a period of time. Plus, check out the "Today's smoke 2016" thread to see what others are smoking too. I'll be honest and never heard of Tatuaje and Crowned Heads cigars until I joined here. Now they're staples in my humi and very enjoyable smokes. Their prices aren't bad either at my local B&M.
