Finally, it has come and gone,,, we've (Santee Fire, Santee School District, Santee Sheriff's Station) have been working on a full-scale bio-hazard drill at one of the K-8 schools for over a year. Since I represented the Sheriff's Office, I was responsible for completing our Operational Plan, making all notifications, requesting/assigning Sheriff's personnel, Incident Commander on scene.... This morning, the drill went off exceptionally well, evacuating 842 + staff, decomantination area, all the bells and whistles. We shut down the entire area (a few P O'd folk,,, oh well).
Those FD folk humped it the entire time (3 engines, 2 ambulances), in their full breathing aparatus, clearing buildings, carrying victims (180 lb dummies) out of harms way and through the decon process. Truly amazing to watch. My main responsibility was to monitor four different radios, needed to keep in contact with each respective Emergency Operation Center, and with my troops (1 Sergeant, 1 Corporal, 3 Deputy Sheriff's, 4 Community Service Officers, and 11 Senior Volunteers (love my Seniors!!)). Our main objective was road closures, traffic control, student/staff safety, and continual updates to our EOC, which I directed from the CP.
Debrief is over, after-action report to follow....
now, it's time to
One of the school district officials was present at the scene. He handed me the brand new Gurkha Fuente Fuente for my troubles. Guess what I'm smoking after my nap?
A great eye-opener,,, here's to never having to use it!! I tip my hat to all Emergency personnel in our fine country! When you get the chance, thank those who serve you!!
