I just wanted to get everyone's insight on my recent sour tasting cigars. My hydrometer is reading at +4, showing 69%rh and 61 degrees. Tonight, I smoked a Sam Leccia white and noticed the horrendous sour taste; I panicked. I tried a padron, an undercrown, a gueirella warfare - all tasting the same - sour. So it would seem that all my cigars, which is a substantial amount, now seem ruined. From what I understand, stogieninja mentioned that this could be the fermentation process in which I would have to wait 2-6 months to let the "sick" stage pass? Or that my cigars are overhumidified; however, with 65% bovedas and a +4 hydrogemeter reading, im sure they are not. But, if they are, would dryboxing alleviate the sourness? Please advise; for I am in despair. :(

I doubt that the cigars you listed are in a sick period - those should be good to go ROTT, for the most part.

Question - are they tarring up on you? As in, developing a bit of tar at the head as you smoke?

A couple of weeks back I was smoking a Black Belt Buckle and during the second third it began to tar up and had the sour taste; however, after reclipping and smoking some more, the sourness passed. Currently, all the aforementioned cigars are tasting sour right off the bat.

Hmm.... Tar was my first thought but if that's not the issue, I think we'll be better off waiting to see what other bros here have to say about it...

What type of humidor are you using, and how long had the cigars mentioned above been resting in it?

Not saying I have the answer or insight, just identifying all the variables.

Have you smoked something fresh from a B&M or a friends stash? I ask because it could be your tastes are off for some reason and it has nothing to do with the cigars in you box at all. Plenty of things could effect taste, including your diet, medications, or if you've been sick recently. How long has this been an issue?

Im using a Sterilite 20 QT. gasket box with 2 Cedgr trays and 4 boveda 65 packs. The above cigars have been resting in them from 2+ months to as recent as 2 weeks ago. On monday I received a smallbatch order and they still seem to be good.

I received my Tatuaje PCR's from small batch on Monday and they did not taste sour at all. Tonight, I lit one up and it was fine; however, everything else tasted sour, as if they were all the same stick.

How many cigars are you smoking in a day? How fast are you smoking said cigars? As mentioned above certain medications can affect your taste buds, opiates especially dull the taste buds. I only ask these questions because I used to find myself puffing the tar right out of a stick. Slowed everything down and it got better instantly, plus the occasional purge to burn up excess oils/tars. Also smoked a few while on pain meds that were either different or just plain awful from what I remembered. I've never heard of an entire humi getting sick, unless maybe you have a fake cc with some dog shit rolled in it

I smoke about 2-5 cigars a week. I do noticed with the Tats if I smoke fast, they tend to get bitter; however, with everything else, upon first light they taste sour. In other words, there is no other taste except sourness.

I do notice a sweet damp like tobacco smell... I'm wondering even though the hydro has me listed at 65-66 after accounting for variance, is it possible that they could be wet due to condensation or the low temperature?

Sounds like you've got an issue with humidity judging by the sour taste, damp smell, and fact your new cigars taste fine.

So if Humidity is the culprit and I'm using 65 bovedas, then i'm thinking of purchasing 62 bovedas now? Also, I noticed the bovedas feel damp.

What is the humidity outside the humidor? Sounds to me like you may be getting some leakage??????? Or maybe you have been adding new cigars that may have been fairly wet???? Just a couple shots in the dark here

Good point, is it humid where you live?

So going by my +4 hydrogmeter reading, the humidity outside my humidor is displaying 64, while in the tuppedor, 69, in the small batch boveda pack, 73. Two weeks ago I added a shipment from famous that sat out in the rain, but when opened, the cigars didn't seem overly wet. I thought his may be the culprit but another tuppedor had a sour cigar as well. The only similarity between the two is the 65 boveda pack

So it seems like it might be a humidity issue in that I put the padron that tasted sour last night that came from my 65 tuppedor into an empty humidor, and tasting it this morning was without any sourness at all. Similarly, I placed another stick from my 65 tuppedor in another dry box and it seems to taste normal this morning with periodic faint undertones of sourness. So imagine my confusion when it seems like they are overhumidified, yet my hydrometer is reading 69-70 in the tuppedor and 73 for the small batch bags, yet the taste of the cigars in the small batch pack tasted fine and normal whereas the cigars placed in the 65 sour. Strange indeed.
