For educational purposes, I opened up 7 cigars from 7 popular brands. I removed the excess leaf from the center veins/stems to show that they are in every cigar and are a key part to each blend. All of them(the cigars) varying in strength from mild to strong. The cigar on the bottom is a stronger cigar I know well that uses Nicaraguan higher primings in the filler. The thicker the leaf, the thicker the vein/stem. This is normal. @tatuajecigars @thesnsclub Forgot to mention the need for them for the structure of the cigar.

This is interesting. I have watch many videos of cigar production and they always show women de-steming the leaves. I've watched many rollers and they always have the leaves stacked and ready with all the stems removed. I have even taken a few cigars apart and have never found a stem. What's up ?

Usually the destemming you see is for wrapper leaf.

The above pic are not stems. Pepin destems (removes the center vein) on all his tobacco. But when you are growing leaves the size of bath towel. Even the accessory veins are going to be big. Those you just can't remove you would ruin the tobacco for hand rolling (bunching)

Absolutely. You need to realize the difference between stems and veins. You should never find a stem. Veins are going to be there,as Justin said. Central ones are stripped, especially for wrapper. Any good bunchero wouldn't include an overly large or thick vein if it can be removed easily. BUT, these are made by human hands so perfection is never assured

I can attest to this. I'm 100% sure I've spent more money on cigars that weren't smokeable out of Raices Cubanas than were smokeable, if I didn't count any of the Illusione products.

Sorry I think I have a grudge due to all the money I wasted on cigars coming from there, but I do speak the truth.

Thank you, a stem attaches the leaf to the stalk of the plant. It is outside the leaf. A vein, though thick and woody, is inside the leaf. There is a difference though, on huge tobacco leaves, as someone pointed out, veins can be as thick and woody as stems you might see on other plants. An actual stem would be huge.

Looking back at the photo that started this thread it is now obvious that they are veins. I grew my own tobacco a few years ago and even my smaller plants had center stems larger than the veins in the photo. Thanks for straightening out my thinking.
