Inaccurate Boveda

Has anyone run into an issue where their Boveda packs are inaccurate? Based on calibrating my hydrometer with the boveda packs, I was under the assumption I was at +4; however, after calibrating via the salt test, it seems that my hydrometer is in fact correct. For example, my cigars have recently become spongy, bitter, and sour while in my tupperdore with 65% boveda backs (Hydrometer showing 70%). I bought some 62 packs and put them in another tuppedor and the hydrometer shows 66%. Now I'm wondering if anyone has ever come across this issue and if the solution would be to buy lower % packs to account for the +4-5 difference I am seeing.

I'd almost guarantee that it is the hygro that is inaccurate. I know that is what most people wouldn't want to hear after they go through the hassle of calibrating, but it would be tough to see 2 bovedas at 2 different humidity being 4% high. You didn't mention temperature, but you should remember that the calibration should be done as close to 70F as possible.

I would agree with KK as well. Salt test is not 100% accurate and I would say Bovedas are more accurate than the salt test. Buy a Boveda calibrating kit for cheap and follow the instructions. If the temp where your sticks are stored fluctuates, your hygrometer may be slow to respond to adjusting RH.

Boveda is a stone cold reliable product, brother (the salt test...not so much! (n)) I barely ever read my hygro (only on Sunday mornings) and my sticks are seasoned to perfection! :cigar: . I use Boveda 65s and my hygro is dead steady at 63-65%.

Get yourself any Boveda pack and use THAT to calibrate your hygro...not the salt test!

YMMV.

Thank you for the responses and this just adds more to the headache and confusion in caring for our beloved cigars, lol. I think its also important to mention that previously I had a two separate tupperdors with 65 bovedas in them that resulted in many sticks becoming sour and spongy over time, which is why I'm leaning towards the bovedas being inaccurate; however, given everyone's faith in them I am at even more a loss now.

What kind of sticks are we talking about here?

do you keep Spanish cedar in your tupperdore? how big is the tupperdore? Your sticks may be at too high an RH that the Bovedas need more time to absorb the RH in the tupperdore. I would a) add more bovedas or b) open the tupperdore and let the sticks dry out a little (assuming your home is lower that 65% rh).

But definitely calibrate your hygro with a kit or an actual Boveda like mentioned above.

What brand is your hydro anyhow? analog or digital? If its analog, pitch it and get a digital one.

Every BOTL should also stop stressing so much about minor fluctuations in the ambient rh in their humi. :)
This is true, I've seen cigars withstand more than minor fluctuations. They see way worse on the way here.

I have found that in airtight containers like coolidors and tupperdores, sometimes Bovedas will sit a couple percentage points high, depending on the ambient humidity in the room.
