Put a mug of water in to heat up, turned it on, 3 seconds later BUZZZZZZZZAP! and smoke started coming out.

This is the 3rd or 4th one we've blown up in less than 10 years.

I swear I don't put anything metal in there.

Do these things die all the time for you guys or am I doing something wrong?

The newer microwaves seem to last about 3-4 years in my experience. Cheap crap can't hold up. Our microwave at work is close to 20 years old and still chugs away!

Interesting.
I've blown up a microwave before.
Wanted to see if putting aluminum foil would spark in there. It did.

I dont recommend it lol, this happened pre internet/youtube days.
:D I did that when we got our first microwave back in the 80's except i put silverware in it. It did this:

:wideyed: i shut it off and did not play with the microwave again.

Yeah good point, Schramalam... dirty power source (surges, voltage variation etc) could explain that, although I haven't had any problems with other appliances in the house. Maybe I'll put the next one on a surge suppressor.

I bet the fuse on your panel is too big. My fuse blows about once a week or anytime I run my microwave and ANYTHING else. At least it's just the breaker though and not the microwave.

For some it's different appliances....we have a microwave that just works and works but when it comes to washing machines.....they have ears and eyes. If I talk about it...it will up and die so we don't talk around it.
I go through washing machines like it's my freakin' job or something! I finally broke down and bought the $200 extended service contract on the last one. And of course it's running like a champ...
