No idea what is actually going on. But wanted to throw my 2 cents in about appliances as a guy that delivers them for a living.
Nothing is made like it used to be. I pull 20 and 30 year old appliances from houses daily along with others that are 2-3 years old.
What I have seen done a lot is people that buy the 5 yr protection plan through the big store with the blue name plate (cant actually comment my employer) and have them replaced after 4 yrs for made up reasons. Just sayin. The managers in your areas may not be as lenient as mine.

My microwave story happened many years ago while I was working at my first job as a dishwasher in a local restaurant. This was 1977, long before most people had microwaves in their homes.

I was working one night when the cook put a baked potato that was wrapped in foil inside of a plastic steamer pan, put it in the microwave and turned it on. It literally blew the door off the microwave and put a huge dent in the door of the walk-in cooler that was directly in front of it (about 6 feet away). I was about 10 feet to the right of it and it pretty much scared the crap right out of me. I quickly earned immense respect for the power of the microwave and the correct rules of operation.

I go through washing machines like it's my freakin' job or something! I finally broke down and bought the $200 extended service contract on the last one. And of course it's running like a champ...
I bought a Maytag in the past. It crapped out in less than two years. Bought an El Cheapo Roper and that thing has been running for over a decade. I've had the same issue with dishwashers. In our old house we had a no-name dishwasher from the early 1990s. That thing was loud, but it worked like a beast. In the new house I've been through a GE and Whirlpool in less than three years.

yeah now that you mention it every GE / Whirlpool / Maytag I've had in the last 15 years has not lasted long.
