What kinda wood is that mate? Is the bark still on? At first glance I thought it was but now not so sure. I've tried to make some plaques etc with timber and I can't find anything that the bark wants to stay on when dead. If there is no bark on that it would work fine too as it looks great.

Yes, the bark is still on. I sanded it back with a disc to get that affect on it. I'm not overly confident it will stay on but thought I would try it out and if it comes off so be it. I have put about 4 coats on it so far in hope that it will help keep it on.
As for the type of timber I'm not 100% sure. The guy I got it off couldn't remember but thought it may have been a "foam tree" but my brother said it looks similar to Chinese elm but really not sure.

If you wanted a nice timber to work with that has great grain and isn't too hard, a camphor laurel is beautiful and they are classed as a weed.
