I believe I read somewhere that to avoid getting into trouble vendors will sometimes scratch the serial numbers off of a box headed to the US so that it can't be traced back to them.

It usually means that vendor is protecting its distribution rights by removing serial number. Habanos S.A. can revoke distribution rights from vendor if they're selling product outside their licensed region. There might also be micro-printed serial numbers on government seal, but you'll need a magnifying glass to find them.

Since there are micro-printed serial numbers elsewhere on the label, I find it odd that someone would think removing only the barcode would help.

Their store, their rules, I guess.

Photos end up online; micro- print doesn't show up in those, but a full serial number does.
