The thread title is self explanatory... Im looking for the small rectangle type hygrometer that dosent suck.

I ordered the xikar (non calibratable) and it was off nearly 10%, then struck out with the black digital one that came. It was right but the LCD was goofy.

Should I just keep trying and hope to get one that works or am I overlooking something?

Thanks guys!

Ive got a couple of hygrosets in my cabinet.. no problems at all out of either of them.. Havent had to calibrate them in probably 2 years.. paid $13 for each of them on the devil site probably 4 years ago... and only had to calibrate them once, after I replaced the batteries a few years back (not sure they needed calibration then either.. but I figured what the hell, and ran them through the process.. I think I had to adjust one of them by 1% and the other one by 2%? don't recall specifically)....

When they were taking them off the market, I went to (shudder) Thompsons and ordered like ten of the Xikar round ones that could be calibrated on clearance. They've been spot on so far. I replace the batteries and calibrate them once per year.

Sorry, that doesn't help you much! I also had great experience with Western Digital Caliber IVs on Amazon.

The trick with almost all of them is a) don't use the salt test, use a Boveda pack, and b) don't test in cold or hot temps as that will screw with the readings, and c) make sure you're testing them over a longer period, 12-24 hrs between readings. The salt test is easy to do wrong, too much water or salt can screw it up. If the temp isn't right, the calibration will be wrong, and if you put it in a container and open the container to check the readings, there's often not enough time for the ambient rH to reach the desired rH, which gives you the wrong readings.

I use a hygroset. Placed it in a plastic bag with a boveda pack for about 12 hours. It read 70% on a 69%rh boveda. Adjusted it down one and its been solid since. Use it in a jar and its at a solid 70%. Never moves.

I also use a WD Caliber IV. Calibrated once, and in about three years it hasn't strayed. Although, with the Bovedas in there, it never moves and has (almost) proven itself to be obsolete. I actually trust the Bovedas packs more than I would trust the hygro.
