Ever Bring Your Own Hygrometer into a B&M ?

Has anyone done this when trying a new, to you, B&M ? I have quite a few Western Caliber IV digital hygrometers. (They keep watch on several Tupperdors and are also in cases holding wooden musical instruments.) I've gone into B&Ms who had hygrometers in their walk in humidors, whose readings I doubted. I understand the local B&M has to charge more for cigars than what I can find online. But, after paying what can be a significant premium, I want a stick that is smokable (even if I have to dry box it for a day ot two). It would be nice to be able to check the B&M RH with a hygrometer that I have previously tested & calibrated. What say you ?

Well, to me, you're workin' it too much...but keep in mind that I approach this cigar thing as a means to relax, not another part time job! So, I don't get real fretty about things. But if you feel better about doin' it, well, head on!!!!

While I certainly understand the point here from the customers end I think its bound to rustle some jimmies. IMO either deal with wet sticks or shop elsewhere. Its their business if they want the RH that high let em be.

I was thinking more in terms of having it in a pocket and maybe discretely pulling it out to check RH in a B&M when I was on the road. Wasn't gonna necessarily mention it to the owners - I may not be back that way again anyway.
Ive walked into humidors that just 'didn't feel right' in terms of humidity, - but I was just guessing, and didnt know for sure.

i rarely pass through a B&M simply to browse/buy and then bounce. if i head there, im going with the intention of smoking a cigar or two or three.

that said, there are few B&Ms whose walk-ins i trust simply for the humidity levels. if i plan on smoking 2 cigars (for example), i will bring 2 from home to smoke at the B&M - but will purchase 2 cigars from them and bring them home and let them acclimate to the humidity in my humi, which i can control.

Another potential issue is how long it even takes for a hygrometer to give an accurate reading. At home, of course, I seal the device in the humi. I usually don't look at it till the next day, so conditions can stabilize. I don't really know what the minimum time might be, and the instruction sheet for the Caliber IV doesn't say.

I know they are all high. they have to be with all the people in and out. very hard to control. i usually don`t smoke right out of a BM humi and if I do and the stick has burn or taste issues I am not shocked. I usually smoke what I brought with me and anything I buy i take home and throw in my humi awhile.

Sounds like everyone pretty much assumes that the B&M humi will likely be off - probably on the wet side. I have my 3 stick case and will bring a couple of my own sticks & save the ones I buy at the B&M for later.

One more question brothers - if you were going to immediately smoke a cigar there at the B&M that you just bought -
are there particular cigars, vitolas, etc that are more likely to provide a decent experience than others ? If you were somehow forced to smoke one of their cigars there, which one would you choose ? Or is this question unanswerable ?

Best rule of thumb in this instance is to ask the owner to let you know which cigars are recent additions in the humi. They will have had less time to acclimate to the high RH levels. The longer it sits in a wet humi, the worse it will be.

No real need.... I know any sticks I buy at my local B&M(as well as most others) will be over humidified. Like others said, bring some there that you want to smoke and buy some to take home.

I usally go for robos or toros. Beloscos. I think it would all be personal preference. And i wouldnt put myself in a position where i would be forced to smoke straight out of the hummi. Sometimes it cant be avoided, so pick a cheapie stick so it doesnt bother you much

Exactly what I do. I don't ever plan to smoke a cigar I buy at the b&m the same day at the B&M. Bring some to smoke and replace the paid fors in the traveldor.
