Ok, so I found a couple of things for sale elsewhere. I messaged the person asking about them, to make sure they were still available. I received a response that said "for now". A few minutes later I received another message that stated "I was offered $ for them". The price offered was more than the asking price. Then, I received another message asking what my offer was. If you wanted more money for them, you should've listed them at a higher price. I responded and just let him know if they were still available at the listed price, i'll take them. Not getting into a bidding war over them, however. Is it just me, or is that wrong?

After you pay if he gets a higher offer he'll take the other payment as well, and then you have to fight for your money back. Or wait while Mr Greedy tries to recreate the order.

I'm sure that's what happened. Someone said "I want them", but then someone else came along and said "I'll give you X amount for them". That's BS though. Once you list something and someone says "I want them" they're pending. Once they're paid for, they're sold. If you wanted more for them, ask more.
Same here! The funny thing about it, is he's a long-standing member, who had a few people comment on the post and say they vouch for him.

If you had said, "I'd like to buy them" and he said "Ok, they're yours" and then had come back to you with "Hey, someone else offered me more" then that could be considered inappropriate for sure.
On a forum like this, on a deal between friends, that could also be considered inconsiderate based on the relationship. For example if I were selling something and one of you guys made an inquiry, I would wait to hear back on a yes or no before moving to another offer, just out of consideration for a fellow BOTL.
But between strangers, meh. If you haven't paid for them, and he hasn't committed to sell them to you, he's free to do as he likes; he doesn't owe you anything. If he gets a higher offer, he doesn't owe anything to you at a lower price because he hasn't committed to sell and you haven't committed to buy. It's a bit of a dick move if you're both part of a community like BOTL, but if it's one of the online sale forums, those rules are out the window, you may as well be dealing on craigslist.
Unless I'm buying from someone I know, I just assume the seller entertaining other offers until he makes a commitment to sell ("They're all yours", "We have a deal", etc). If I'm selling, same thing: until the buyer makes a commitment, I assume they're just browsing.

I guess I see it a little bit different than you. If I post something for sale at a set price, and someone sends me a message and says "I want them", I consider them pending. If someone else emails me after and says they want them, I will generally reply with "they're pending, but if they fall through, you're next in line" etc. I don't disagree that the person selling is free to do as they please, but to sell them to the highest bidder, vs the first person to say "I want them" is just shady to me.

If you sent me a message with "I want them", I'm going to do the same as you, consider them pending. But if you sent a message with "Are these still available", you're just kicking the tires. I don't know if you're going to come back and try to negotiate down or what.
That being said, I'm assuming the seller is being honest. He might just be lying to get you to pay more, which is quite shady.

My exact words to him were: If ___ and ____ are still available, i'll take them. Definitely won't be dealing with this guy now, or anytime in the future.
If I put something up for sale for $100, and someone contacts me and says he'll take them, they're his. If another person then offers me $110 for them, my response is "sorry, they're already sold" not contacting the original guy asking for $120. That's just simple human decency.

I dont buy cigars this way, but i love flea markets and auctions. Negotiation is the name of the game. The trick is in knowing the actual value. I will nearly always put forth a lower offer, and wait for a counter. If your price is firm, and the price is in line, I'll respect that and reconsider my offer. If the counter offer is concrete, I'll consider that. But to be blindly told "I was offered more" then I'm done. If you want to sell to the highest bidder, use ebay or a local auctioneer. If it's something I want I'll bid to what I'm willing to pay. At least in that arena I can see who I'm bidding against, and know somebody "offered me more". The blind "I was offered more" or "I paid more than that" ends any discussion from me. I'm walking away.
