I got a semi cheap humidor as a gift today, it came with the seasoning wipes from Humicare - anyone used these before? The instructions it came with basically said it will be cigar ready in 24 hours...

As seen from others, I'd recommend to NOT wipe down the inside of the humidor. @qpzmide is right and maybe get yourself the boveda kit. Or you can use small shot glasses of distilled water and let it sit in there. Let the wood take what it needs on its own. I'm sure others here might agree or disagree with me. Or they might have some other suggestions and/or recommendations on seasoning.

I made that mistake years ago, prior to joining here to wipe down my whole humidor. I followed the directions and didn't know any better back in the day. Luckily, it's still running strong and if I ever had to re-season I'd go a different route. Of course that was way before me joining here on BOTL too.

the only bad things about wiping down is 1. the wood expands to fast and cracks. 2. you open yourself up for mold and fungus straight out of the gate. these are the only two negitives about wiping down the hummi. these are both things that would only happen maybe like 30% of the time but i would hate to spend $100 on a humi and have it crack or grow nasty stuff in it and have to be thrown out

Wiping down a humidor with a seasoning wipe or a sponge with DW takes some care....very lightly...just enough to barely leave a trace. Some will wipe it down like they are cleaning a car windshield....just a trace amount will work. I've used DW for 30 years w/o incident but that's because I wring out every bit of water out of the sponge I use. Pre moistened wipes work but you can't just wipe the inside of the humidor like your sanding it down...excess moisture causes problems. The best way to season that won't cause any harm is to use the passive approach and leave a shot glass of DW inside the humidor and let it do its job for a few days but in this 'hurry up' world a lot of people want it done in 24 hours and I've seen this stupid approach more and more lately with people posting in Cigar Forums about how they can season a humidor in 24 hours....then they sheepishly come back with a post about how their humidor is now growing some kind of mold/fungus and that their cigars aren't smoking like they used to...duhhhhh.

I can't speak for the Humicare wipes. But seasoning is really simple nowadays! (y)

1. Wipe down the cedar *very* lightly with distilled water (leaving it barely damp -- not saturated).
2. Insert a large Boveda of desired humidity.
3. Close lid and check hygrometer in 24 hours (making sure it's calibrated first).

Boveda is so reliable, I honestly don't even bother with a hygrometer anymore. Idiot-proof! ;)

YMMV.

Wiping it down can cause issues. Let the wood absorb the water more slowly. You wouldn't put a cigar in a food dehydrator to rush the rh-lowering process. You wouldn't use a flamethrower to rush the toasting process. Don't wipe down the humidor to rush the seasoning process either.

Seems opinions are split, I take it works if done correctly and not doused and saturated which seems possible if your not careful or just careless.
Those that used Boveda's, anyone ever notice (maybe its all mental) that some types of cigars seem to get less moisture than others compared to using the oasis? Is this true or am I dreaming?

I changed my mind after Derek @StogieNinja chimed in -- better to leave the wood UN-wiped and let the Boveda work its magic.

Not for me. All my sticks burn extremely well these days. I used to have a LOT of burn and inconsistency issues before Boveda. They are, unequivocally, the best humidification system available. :cigar:

I do not recommend wiping your humi. But what do I know!!!! I will add that wiping has a chance ( although it is small if you do it right) it could cause mold to set in, damage to the wood, or compromise your seal. Not wiping Has a 100% chance to not do those things. It's about risk tolerance/management.
