OK. So my son has a Birthday on 12/15 and of course xmas is just 9 days away from that. I wanna get a variety of cigars for a new smoker. To spend time with him would be nice. He's already getting shoes so I look at this as a unique suprise.

I wanna expose him to many varieties to help him find his pallet. So, my idea is to get him 1 cigar from each of the main regions. Honduran, Dominican, etc. What do ya'll think? Any ideas or better ideas than what I have?

If he's not a smoker currently, I would focus less on country of origin and more on overall profile. Maybe shoot for a milder Connie, something with Ec Habano, something dark and smooth, and something maybe with spice and kick. Kinda see where his profile is, and tell him once you have smoked through those different profiles, you'll buy him another fiver within his preference so he can kinda develop his palate and see the differences within a certain profile.

As a newbie, this is a difficult thing to propose. The first thing is understand that smoking a cigar to the end maybe after two or three draws. When is a cigar finished? When you have had enough! I imagine a few folks were shocked that I allowed a cigar to go out because it didn't suit my taste. Don't let your feelings get hurt if he doesn't like a choice. I have smoked quite a few that I let go out after just a few draws. Then when one is discovered that he smokes to the end and really enjoys it, wahlah, success! In fact I was beginning to think that there was not a cigar for me. Now I find myself thinking about the Crowned Heads Luminosa and wanting to smoke it. I have one left and I have to decide, do I want to smoke it now or buy more before I smoke it! Anyway my experience so far. I recommend mild cigars of course to start.
My list so far, Oliva Connecticut Reserve Toro smooth, A. Fuente Gran Reserva, very smooth, Butera Toro was an excellent smoke for me. CAO Gold N Double was another good one that I enjoyed. Crowned Heads Luminosa is my favorite so far!

I think that, since he's a newb and doesn't have his own palate as yet, maybe the best experience for him would be to share your favorites with you. It's about the experience, not the smoke. He can figure out what he likes on his own.

Every newb has a palate, might not be an experienced palate but a palate nonetheless, newb.

A lot of people say that new smokers should start with lighter sticks (like Connies). I disagree with that. I think he should try a variety. I like Connecticut Broadleaf and didn't smoke one for a long time after I started smoking because I thought the darker ones were for "advanced smokers". Tell him, cigars are like food... some taste way different than others; and don't eat with your nose plugged ;)
Honestly, I think until you refine your pallet, it's easier to taste the differences in the bolder ones. After a pallet gets more refined, it becomes easier to pick out the tastes/differences/nuances in the lighter sticks.
Since you asked for some suggestions, I suggest trying different types of tobacco/wrappers (I guess along the lines of different countries).

I second the Illusione Rothschilds. Most people I've gifted these to have lvoed them and for the price you can beat em.
