Former Mr. Universe Tom Platz. I got to hang out with Platz for the better part of two days about 20 years ago. He's not just mugging for the camera in this pic: he really loves cigars.

Many years ago as a kid and young adult I was into weight training/ body building. I idolized Tom Platz. He had the biggest quads in the business and one of the reasons I have very bad knees as a fat old guy.

Many years ago as a kid and young adult I was into weight training/ body building. I idolized Tom Platz. He had the biggest quads in the business and one of the reasons I have very bad knees as a fat old guy.

Platz told me that he's never squatted properly. He's extremely lucky that his knees are in good shape considering that, but also considering his antics on the hack squat machine. He brutalized his knees with that thing.

Unfortunately, his shoulders aren't in very good shape. He attributes that to the fact that he did behind-the-neck presses, behind-the-neck pull ups, behind-the-neck pull downs, etc. He pointed out that Lou Ferrigno never did behind-the-neck anything and his shoulders are fine.
