I love what Heaven Hill did to the newly updated Elijah Craig bottle/label. Very cool stuff. I also should've added before that when I bought my bottle of 12 year Craig, it had a peculiar transition. When I first uncorked it it had very smooth almond like complexities to it. Each time after that it got harsher and harsher and transitioned into an almost not enjoyable whiskey. I keep all my Bourbons in one spot and so far I'm 1 for 13 on this dilemma

Also the cap Separated from the cork stopper (a common trait I hear). I hope they improved that part at least LOL
cannot comment on the new bottles if that is true or not - have not purchased any currently, but never really had that issue with the originals

The bottle is the same its the label that's different. In years past it was 12 year old whiskey. Now we don't know what's in there except that its an inferior product.
Never had an issue with the cork before.

Also, there are many taste profiles for bourbon. Not everyone likes the same as you do. Try as many as you can and make up your own mind. Just like you do on cigars. Buffalo Trace is a good, inexpensive readily available bourbon.

Also, always respect bourbon. Too much, too quick will make you sicker than sick and might change your mind about bourbon forever. I have a good friend of mine that cannot drink bourbon to this day because he would not he'd the warning I gave to him. I use the two finger and only two rule. Much easier to enjoy. Lol

I think they updated the full package (well maybe not the actual whiskey itself)

You know what, that is a different package. I'm still seeing last years "small batch" bottles here.
Geeze, I'd much rather they go back to the 12 year old juice, but that's probably gone for good now.
Damn I can remember buying EC on sale for $17.95 just a few years ago. Okay, maybe its been 10 or so. :D

As I stated in a previous comment to Sweemzander, i'm not here implying that everyone will like the same bourbon as myself, or that everyone likes the same profiles. To a new bourbon drinker the first bourbon they try is often sacred & memorable.
I started this thread to mainly serve those looking to get into the hobby and where to start. (From our own experience). I guess I'm part of a monority that enjoys the researching/statistical side of the hobby. Plus in this tough economy I don't think many will disagree in spending your money wisely and using whatever tools to your advantage in order to do so.

I couldn't agree more on too much too quickly. Bourbon is a sipping spirit. Especially the small batch, single barrel, bottled in bond, and especially unfiltered Bourbons. Those firing back shots of bourbon are mainly Cowboys back from the dead (zombie Cowboys?) when whiskey was so hot there was no other way to enjoy it but slamming it back. If you drink it neat I suggest no more than 4 fingers.

Interesting. I have not noted any significant difference in taste with the age statement dropped. It's still one of the best values out there and to my taste near the top in it's price range. I would also recommend that you try some of the Bottled-in-bonds. Many are better than bourbons costing 3 times the price.

Have never seen Tom Foolery in the wild.
Blanton's and Buffalo Trace are both good juice. They are also the same juice. Blanton's is the premium barrels and probably older. Age matters. Blanton's is most likely the first pick of the blonde barrels. The barrels that sit in front of the windows of the rickhouse for whatever reason end up different and to most master distillers they end up better too.

Also, Blanton's always comes from the same Rickhouse. 'H' I believe. It is the only rickhouse BT has that is woodframe with metal walls which has greater temp swings throughout the year which gives it the interesting qualities.

I genuinely thought those two were the same mash bill. :bear:

Per bourbonr, Blanton's is a high Rye juice and Buffalo Trace is a lower Rye. Also, as shown Trace and EHT are all from the juice. This is a handy reference which I use regularly. If I had to pick one distillery, this would be it. Even without the BTAC and Pappy.

I agree, I like basically everything they put out. Not that all of it is available here.

Since we're talking about the fine Sazerac/Buffalo Trace whiskies, I'd like to mention one I miss: Ancient Ancient Age. Damn that stuff was good. Of the 3 levels Ancient Age had it appears only the inexpensive entry level iteration still is being offered.
