All of them should play dual layer discs cause thats what commercial DVD9 movies are. I have the phillips that plays divx and love it. The remote isn't the best but it plays a lot of formats and theres a way to set it to region 0 making it play discs from other countries.

But if you have an HDTV you might want to look at one that does upsampling

All kinds out there that play just about everything now. If you have an HDTV be sure to get the upconverting ones though, like Josh said.

No HDTV for me yet

Quality is important but I really want something that will play anything I throw at it.

Not exactly.
Commercial DVDs are dual layer, but they're pressed not burned.
Some DVD players have problems playing burned dual layer discs.
It can even come down to the brand of disc.
Check out http://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers.php for some comparisons.
edit:
For some reason I missed joshua posting that link before me.

Ya know, I've never really tried a dual layer disc before even though most of my burners can use them. They just cost too much to be useful. The only thing they would be handy for is copying a DVD-9 movie without modifying it.

I got a really good deal on some Verbatim DLs (widely acknowledged as the best consumer available blank DL), but my DVD player doesn't like them.
My computer plays them fine, and my friend's player is fine too.

I use them for longer movies that I don't want to split to two discs.
I have a digital projector so I'm sensitive to over-compression to squeeze movies on a disc.

This is the DVD player model that I recently bought:
TOSHIBA DVD, Upsampling with HDMI

I haven't bought an HDMI cable, so I've still got it running through component cables, but that's next on my list of things to get. But even now, running 480p to my 720p HDTV, it looks pretty good. I'm curious how the upsampling to 720p will look. Hopefully, it's a noticable difference. LOL

It was $80 bucks on sale at Best Buy a few weeks ago.

One nice thing about this particular DVD player is that it's region-free, so you can play DVDs from around the world.

Yeah, the upsampling version costs twice as much, so if you don't need it, theere's probably no reason to buy it....because by the time you DO need it, you can probably replace the entire unit for next to nothing. LOL
