So I spent a few years smoking (almost) exclusively CCs. That's what I enjoyed most and that's what people around me were smoking so that's what happened. The occasional NC I smoked rarely satisfied, and just confirmed I was smoking the right thing. Before that I was smoking a mix of NCs and CCs and enjoying both. Before that I smoked mostly full bodied, full flavored cigars. Then, 18 months ago, I moved from So. Cal. to Ohio. Now I smoke mostly by myself.

Here's a couple of things I think I learned.
1) My palate is conditioned by what I smoke. If I smoke a lot of one type, that's the type I end up enjoying most. Whether that's full bodied, medium, NCs, CCs, floral or maduro. I can train my palate to detect a wide range of flavors within any cigar style while still enjoying a spectrum of sticks.
2) It's easier to smoke a bunch of CCs in a single day while NCs tend to clog up my palate after a few.
3) The quality control issue with CCs is not about the draw. Most CC boxes are good with a small number being sublime and a small number being dogs. You can never be certain what you're getting regardless of marca or factory, but you can improve your odds. NC sticks seem to be far more consistent in taste.
4) CCs are great to sit down and contemplate while chatting with other people. NCs rule while working in the yard or walking around (or possibly in colder weather?), and I'm not talking about yard gars (life is too short to be smoking yard gars).
5) Illusione cigars have always tasted great to me, even with 8 years of age on them. (Anybody looking to get rid of some old stock?)
6) The longer I smoke the more I appreciate mild/medium smokes as long as they have good flavor. I'm looking for complexity - a wide range of flavors and dynamics - flavors that change throughout the smoke. Full bodied smokes tend not to change as much.
7) The more I smoked with other people, the less I posted on cigar forums, and vice versa.

So my NC sticks slowly dipped down to 8% of my stash. After smoking some Illusiones, La Palina Goldies and L'Ateliers my interest in NCs has been rekindled. I almost missed out on the rerelease of the ECCJ, Goldie dalia and Extension de la Racine '15. So now my NCs are up to 15% of my stash. Which brings me to this question: What have I been missing? I've heard good things about Caldwell and Warped Cigars so I picked up some Flor del Valle Cristales and Eastern Standard Silk Road (and a box of 12 honest men for <$50 was too good to pass up). What other sticks should I be looking for? Keeping in mind I prefer the medium, graham cracker, pumpkin pie spice thing over the full bodied, charred steak (Viaje anyone?) experience? Anyone willing to put together a sampler to sell or trade (I know wrong forum).

@srduggins welcome back! John here, what part of ohio are you from? :)

I'd recommend trying it all out, your palate is yours after all. Crowned heads, warped, Caldwell, sobremesa, chogui, fabled, gueguense, lfd la nox, so many new releases out there. I'm sure I am missing a few. www.smallbatchcigar.com has all of these cigars in fivers and we get 10% off with code BOTL, famous as well with botlorg 17% off $50+ orders

No Viaje (not good for a long time.)
Warped ( people love them, it's not my thing)
Caldwell (same as warped but warped gets a little more love)
L'Atelier (I love all of them but the fancy ones)
La Palina (I like/will smoke most of them and I don't like much)
Cornelius and Anthony (Actually pretty decent)
Illusione (has been good and is still good. I have much of a box from 2010 if you want to buy/trade, as well as La Palina and Cornelius)

Laranja (very good, JR had toro fivers for $4 which are very cheap)
El Gueguense (also very good)
La Imp (decent)
Sobremesa (from Saka, I like these a great deal but they're not cheap)

From my own personal (though somewhat limited) experience, I'd highly recommend La Colmena by Warped and Le Bijou by my Father if you're looking for a good complex smoke.

Thanks for the tips. It will take me a while to get through them as I like to let my cigars settle for 2 - 4 weeks after I get them. I haven't been gone that long. I remember liking Crowned Heads, but none of their sticks lasted long enough in my stash to see how they age. Each release seemed to get better from Four Kicks to Headley Grange to JD Howard (the last I tried). I remember Mule Kicks and Drum Sticks, but they all went up in smoke. How are the releases since then? Darker and fuller - Is that why Four Kicks might be closer to what I'm looking for?
La Colmena is definitely on my list to try. Le Bijou is a little stronger/meatier than I'm looking for, if I remember it correctly.
I've had the Fume D'Amour and thought it needed a little more strength, but the flavors were exactly what I'm looking for (a little too floral?) but it leaves a taste on my palate and in my mind that I just want more of.
I have a sampler box (8 or 10 sticks) of RoMa Craft that I never got around to trying. Probably 4 or 5 years old now. That sounds like a great place to start, lol.

Pretty much what Ara said. I second his recommendations, particularly the Cornelius & Anthony Cornelius, La Palina (try the TAA, its marvelous), Foundation El Gueguense, and Dunbarton Sobremesa.

Warped is also a personal favorite of mine, the Futuro is excellent, as is the Maestro del Tiempo and the Guardians of the Farm.

Crowned Heads has some great stuff as well, check out Las Mareas, and the CigarFed 729 Calloway, along with any of the TAA and Las Calaveras series.

Yo Steve, glad to see you posting (although I rarely do now days, lol) I like to read FoGs take on their likes/dislikes etc, nice write up. Regarding #7 though, that true? Seems like since you've moved, and been smoking by yourself as you say, I never hear from ya! lol I guess I need to know the right places... :)

I don't smoke hardly any NCs anymore, but @W.B. raves about HVC La Rosa 520. I think it's a limited cigar but a quick google shows them available places. I think @Jfire recently had one and said it was one of the most "cubanesque" NCs he's had. Not sure if other HVC cigars are as good, but I know Warren smokes a lot of those 520s and always raves about'em.

You know I hate most things and I was hesitant when WB recommended the HVC. However, it is a very good smoke.

Reading your points, I feel nearly the same as you Steve.

As mentioned, HVC La Rosa 520's are a favorite of mine for a while; I prefer the Toros(5.5 x 54) more open flavor over the more recent Reyes(6.25 x 48) more concentrated flavor...but I know of another brother who differs.

Id recommend also trying...
Warped MAESTRO DEL TIEMPO 6102R, much better than the other sizes to me. I imagine you've tried Illusione's Epernay's, if you haven't they are worth a try. Of the last few years cigars with Aganorsa tobaccos have been my preference.

The little Davidoff Yamasa is a fine cigar. EPC 2016 Short Run is also very nice imo. Ashton Symmetry as well. These 3 are more towards the fuller end.
Cheers!

welcome back, I wanna reinforce what others have said about some of the newish brands out there Foundation/Dunbarton/Cornelius&Anthony. I think they're all really great. I also think Matilde stuff is worth a look as well and no one has mentioned that yet. There are a number of limited sticks that you would probably enjoy alot if you can find a few (might be difficult though, but if you know alot of collectors you might have a good chance)...judging by what you said I think you would really like the CH angels anvil 14 or snake oil, for warped if you can find the la colmena unicos or riena they're noticeably better than the standard sizes. Also the lirio rojo and flor de valle skyflower are amazing. I know theyre kinda a long shot but it's worth a try to see if you can get a couple

re #7: Yeah, I've been lurking a lot more, but only recently began posting again.
Love the Epernays too and enjoyed a lot of the earlier EPC offerings (until the Cardinal came out).
Just wish I could find 1 place that has everything I'm looking for. The Maestro del Tiempos seem to be sold out in many places. When is the next Small Batch Warped sale? I just missed the last one a few days ago.
I live 30 miles east of Columbus in Heath (next to Newark) Ohio.

Steve! I'll make you a deal: come to the next beach herf and I'll give you a baggie of tasty treats to smoke.

Have you looked at the El Titan de Bronze Redemption lanceros? Light pepper and citrus. I can't keep them on hand; when I have them, they are all I want to smoke.

Welcome back, man! Glad to see you are doing well!
