Here is a question for the cigar historians. Why would someone roll a cigar and go to the trouble of capping the head just so you can cut it off later to smoke it? I ask this because I just finished rolling some myself and I always struggle with making a nice cap.

Some of our resident BOTL home rollers might be able to help answer that. There's quite a few threads I think where they're all lurking.

From my understanding the cap of the cigar was indeed created to prevent the cigar from unraveling. If I remember right it didn't really start to happen till after the mass production of Cigars started so I would guess around the 1650s

Who me? Lol.

1. Wrappers are placed on the cigar from foot to head, the cap prevents that from unraveling the opposite direction.
2. Helps denote which end is the head. This is important since all leaves are placed in the cigar facing the same direction. The tobacco at the foot is mostly comprised of the tips or outermost end of the leaf. This area is where the tobacco has the richest flavor, which makes sense that the less desirable tobacco ends up in the head where one stops smoking the cigar. So the cap signifies where your mouth goes and which end you torch.
3. Makes the cigar look good.

The true answer has already been said....to keep the wrapper from unraveling. The triple cap is the most sought after because it maintains the integrity of the strength to keep that sucker from unwinding like a barber pole. One still needs to make the right cut and not cut off the entire cap which makes the triple capped cigar popular....you'd have to be intent on cutting off the cap on those.
