Picked up a bottle of Auchentoshan Three Wood today, and decided to give it a taste. Paired with a Charter Oak.
At full strength it's almost reminiscent of a bourbon or a nice Irish whiskey, a lot of brown sugar sweetness, strong hazelnut presence and some dark cherry on the finish.
With a little water the peat shows its face, and the dark fruit retreats. The sweetness is actually even more pronounced, almost toward a Canadian whiskey, but it's very light on the tongue despite a rich amber color. The hazelnut is still the most prominent note.
This is my first Lowlands scotch, so I'm not yet sure which characteristics I'm tasting that are typical of the style and which are unique to this malt. Overall I'm very happy, great whiskey at a decent price (~$65).
