I started getting serious about cigars about 10 years ago. Like most people I cut my cigars. I tried a cigar punch on some smaller ring gauge but never gave it much thought since the cutting was always a ritual that I enjoyed. Recently I have started using a punch on all my cigars and I love it. I find the draw is actually better, the cigar feels better in my mouth due to the rounded end with no edges, and it stays firmer right to the end. I usually smoke about a 50 rg cigar and the punch works great. The only time I have to cut is when the draw is too tight. If you are like me and cut all your cigars out of habit, give the punch a try.

I will vary in my cuts, Punch straight, v, but I use the punch about 90%of the time, exit on the small small rgs of course.

I generally go for a punch myself, mainly because there's one on my lighter... Lol..
And I've found, for the larger rg, and tight drawing sticks, punching a few connected holes in a clover pattern works like a champ!

It's probably better to use a "standalone" punch that can be twisted while gently pushing into the cigar. I have had one cigar fall apart while punching but I think it was a construction/humidity issue with the cigar instead of a problem with the punch.
Yeah, twisting with a gentle push is the way to go. I've screwed up a guillotine cut many times but never a punch because the cap stays intact.
That's my game as well. If I use a punch on larger RG I get the "funnel syndrome" where a black ring of tar builds up....nasty ! ... so I'll do the clover.
I really only prefer the punch on smaller RG or box pressed smokes.

Had this for about a year and works great. Couple bucks at a shop and works just as good as the fancy ones. Saved me from searching for a cutter couple of times. And your right on the unraveling being a non issue when used on larger rgs.
i've only punched a few times. Usually a straight cut, sometimes a v cut. I've never understood the issues people have with a cigar unraveling. I've lost many a cap and never had the entire cigar just unravel before my eyes. Just stick a little slobber on the end and it's always held just fine for me.
