So I went to clean the dust from my ceiling fan where all the blades attach in the middle (hub?) with a can of compressed air. Dust fell out but so did small metal chunks... dafuq... they kind of looked layered metal, silver colored.

Any idea? I noticed it was making a weird noise earlier this week but it worked itself out.

Just like any gears, they eventually grind themselves down. Start planning for a replacement.

All that's gonna happen is it's gonna start getting noisier then stop one day. No real risk of anything.

Some of these fans ship with a bag of small stick-on weights to use for balancing. I've handled them before. The previous installer, ( or shipping, ) could have inadvertantly left them in the assembly.
This chewed up thing's origional state would resemble one.

It also resembles a "brush" for the electric motor. ( pre-chewed, as well ) But the unit would not be working properly if that was the case.

These mount to a suspended electrical box in the ceiling. Those boxes contain screws. Also, a ground screw that may not have been utilized.
I always torque them down or remove them so they don't vibrate out.

KookaRocha Syndrome - Something fell out. Next time it craps out, replace the whole thing.

Choose one and good luck LOL.

Fun stuff. I assume if I get the same diameter base and brand that I won't have to do any crazy work mounting the fan to the ceiling? What brands, if any, are reliable?

I just use crap from Homely Depo or BLowe's. :D
Wireup can be tricky on the ones with fan + light assembly, but usually the illustrations are good with these.
Fan size is whatever floats your boat. It's the base size you'll want to stay close, so you're not painting the ceiling. But they're all pretty standard.

If originally installed properly they are easy to change out. You may even do yourself a favor and replace the fan with a fan that uses the same mounting hardware but if you are comfortable doing honeydos around the house it's pretty straight forward. If you have two switches to control the fan and light separately you'll have three wires so make sure you label them as they come out of the ceiling. Hang the fan, hook up the wires and check it before screwing the base in, it will save you some steps if you wired them backwards. They should be labeled on the old and new fan already so you can just replace wire for wire.

Don't forget to throw the breaker before disconnecting the wires.

When you open it up, you will see how easy it is. Piece of cake.

LED would be cool. No bulbs to replace
LEDs will be more energy efficient. Ask @ChuckMejia how it's holding out.

LOL I just noticed you said "15" of those items fell out !!! You would not have 15 weights ( or screws) floating around inside your assembly. LOL I think you have gremlins. !!

Maybe Bearings falling out and getting mangled on their way out of the fan? Only thing that I can think of that would account for the number items found. Fan Replacement is a pretty straight forward task.

Hey now! I like my method, Eff it and get a new one. Things die, I let them go before they fade away!
