Glenlivet was my beginner scotch, then on to the Aberlour, Balbenie, McCallens...all pretty gentle.

When you're ready to step in price just a bit, Oban 14 is very nice.

When you're ready to go broke, Bunnahabbain 18, Balvenie Portwood 21.

When you're ready to sell vital organs, Balvenie Tun 1509

The proper way to drink Scotch is to pour the Scotch and then add a wee bit of water. The water releases flavors. Ice shouldn't be used, but many people do.
I've heard this from several sources including a Master distiller in Scotland who was in a documentary on making Scotch.

But drink it as you like, but for heavens sake, if you mix it, use the cheap stuff!!

For good scotch, my preferred way is in a heated snifter.
Take a brandy snifter and put hot hot hot water in the glass (or a cold water and nuke it till it boils). Swirl a few times to heat the glass. Dump out all the water but dont dry the glass. Add scotch.
Opens the scotch up, rleases aromas, makes the drink taste completly different.
For everyday scotch, rocks.
