I tend to empty them out after a night of smoking, but I have noticed my stinky ashtray rusting like crazy...may be time for a new one.

Mine did the same thing inside. Shot it with several coats of satin clear coat inside and out. No problems since

When they hit the ashtray, no matter the length left, imo

I keep the ash for pipe mud, but after awhile the butts get tossed out.

What is pipe mud?
