we went over to my parents house for dinner tonite. talked about cigars for a while and i told him about the problem of mold running wild with other BOTL's in their Anejo's (he has one too he got in holts sampler) he told me he hasn't been in his humi for a while. he's not that big into cigars and just has a small 50 ct desktop. he brought it out and opened it up and we both nearly broke into tears. his hygrometer was only reading 40% and who knows how long its been like that. but his Anejo and a few cc's i gave him had cracked wide open. we both felt like crying. he also had a few opus x's from the sampler. they both appeared ok. but still. its a tragedy. at least i convinced him to pick up some beads..... and the opus's are now here with me as "refugees"

Sometimes its like that. I gave my son-in-law a number of nice cigars only to find the humi I gave him dry as a bone. I wish there was a humi serive like for fish tanks or pools. Sad.

Sad! At least it was a small humi - small consolation I know. Some of the b&m's I've visited up here have hygrometers in their humis reading close to the same. Sad.:frownno:

Wow, that's painful.

I was once going to gift some nice cigars to a friend who had been smoking for a couple of months, but then he told me that his setup was just a cigar boxes that he got from the B&M, with one of those porous tubes in them. He didn't see why he had to spend any money on special storage, and the concept of RH just escaped him.

I ended up just giving him some basic NC smokes that I had and tried to convince him to at least get an acrylic cigar jar. He couldn't grasp the fact that cigars have very narrow parameters when it comes to their care, or they could be ruined for good.

Maybe you should keep your Dad's sticks in your humi. Then when you go to visit, bring some along to share.

bummer! forgive my ignorance, but why did the cigar split? just due to the low humidity?

i think so. when he opened it and looked at the hygrometer, it read in the low 40's. there is one big crack from just under the band, down to where the red ribbon starts. i have some extrat beads that i was gonna use when i get my new humi seasoned. im gonna give him them and order some more for myself. and im gonna pick him up a digital hygro too. gotta be better than his analog.

I panicked after reading this when I remembered I haven't checked on my humidor in over a week.

Luckily, there was nothing wrong in there. However, it has been pretty dry for the past week so I should definitely check on it more often.
