In the past I've always smoked my CC's shortly after getting them because I had very little self control. :) Here lately I've been bringing more back when I travel, so I've started to let them age. In organizing my stash to make room for new stuff, I found an unmarked box with 20 cigars and a note that said "Partagas P2 2005" I guess these were some I picked up ages ago and forgot about. I had one a couple of days ago and it was amazing. Much better than I remembered them being. So my question is, did letting this cigar rest for 13 year make that big of a difference? or is my memory of the taste kind of fuzzy. haha If aging does make a difference, is there a sweet spot to aim for? Cheers!

Aging makes all he difference. The sweetspot really varies from cigar to cigar and your own personal preferences, you might like them rested with just a couple years downtime. But a cigar is only considered "aged" after 5 years, and thats a decent benchmark when you'll notice that many cigars calm down, lose that potent nicotine and start to hit a stride. For me, all of my all time favorite cigars had 10+years on them. To give you an idea of how long the legs on plenty of CCs are, a cigar is only considered "vintage" when its 15+ years old.

Maybe overthinking it, but I try to buy original year release cigars when I can. Like Icehog said they always seem to be the best ones. I cannot prove that an initial release uses the best tobacco and rollers to roll them, but from a sales/marketing perspective it makes total sense to release the best you have so people buy more.
To answer the OP aging does make a difference. 2013 was an exception. Rumor was that 2013 already used stockpiles of aged tobacco. I cannot prove that either, but fresh 2013 were almost all approachable ROTT. I still like some stuff fresh. Usually sample along the way to see how the progression is going. Fresh 16/17 P2 have been great. Lots of other stuff I've sampled gets put back away for 4-6 months before trying again.

Great information guys! How do you guys tag or label the age on sticks you're aging? I just picked up several 10 counts and would rather not waste the space on a box. I've got drawers in my wineador that I can put them in, but want to make sure I track the date. Do you just write the date code on a sticky note and put it in with them? lol

The easiest way to keep track is to simply buy boxes, which have the date code on bottom. If you are purchasing singles and five packs I would recommend using the blank bands and labeling a couple of them.

In 4 years I guess I’ll know what you guys are talking about.

For tracking I bought a price sticker gun from amazon. Makes it real easy to date everything I purchase. Cost like $10. Fits on most bands if cigar isn’t in cellophane as well.
Have fun taking those stickers off your habanos lol

Some of these photos are killin me.....I feel like I took Cialis looking at them. Honestly....the one thing about aging that frustrates me ( and I age a lot of cigars....) is that as we age we lose our sense of taste....our taste buds die off and adult males have about 10,000....when we get older we lose half of them. At a early age taste buds would regenerate but once you hit the Golden Oldies your body goes into "lets play with Grandpa" and suddenly you have hair growing out of your ears and nose like the Hedges around Normandy....your get up n go left no forwarding address and you find yourself using the term Depends as a noun, adjective and verb.

We make do with whatever time we have. AmIrite? Smoke it, enjoy it, cause one day we wont be able to anymore, no matter how many tastebuds we got left! :)
