When I saw that James Franco played Jake/George I was instantly turned off so I have yet to try it, he should stick to stoner films.

Jake/George has a friend who helps him.........like ever step of the way! & i'm not sure if he's real or imaginary, I kinda tuned out after that, just STUPID!

Ah, can't be worse than the new IT movie
Ok ok, on a more serious note when I haven't been reading to my daughter this week I've been reading The Old Man and the Sea. A close friend's father passed away recently - a brilliant, loving, selfless man. I learned after he passed this was one of his favorite books so I picked up a copy. Surprisingly, I had never read this man vs nature story. It's filled with powerful quotes and stories and I imagine it's a book you would learn something from every single time you read it.
A quote I marked as it has strong correlations with how I was pointed to the book, "'But man is not made for defeat,' he said. 'A man can be destroyer but not defeated.'"
I think I'll revisit this one again in a few months for a re-read.

I liked the new IT movie *now I was at the drive in with a couple of buddies, we were smoking, drinking bourbon, and carrying on, but I liked it*
I do want to re-watch it, before part 2 comes out

Alright guys, I picked up Band of Brothers yesterday, and only have about 50 pages left. Weather here is cold and windy. Not much else to do but read. Great book.
Looking for another book, militarily themed. Have read ,,Lone Survivor, American sniper, and Marine sniper( my favorite military book)several times, along with several vietnam era sniper, and LRRPs books. Have also read a good sniper book from the Iraq war, but the name escapes me. What are some recommendations for similar books?

My first as well. I've heard people say Hemingway can go into excruciating detail that can drag on for ever and ever which has kept me away from his work. I can see how that could be a real possibility if it were a long book but The Old Man and the Sea at only about 120 pages wasn't long enough to drag out.
I have to disclose that I am incredibly harsh on book adaptations.
I can see why people liked it, casting was as perfect as any director would have been able to get, the kids were great. My issue is that I think so many of Stephen Kings stories would be better told if not cut down to 1 1/2 or two hours films. Especially a book the size of IT, so much gets lost with writers having to cut down the plot which eventually leads to changing endings, characters, etc to make their adaptation work. If it was a six part series with hour and a half episodes done by HBO or Starz I think it would have killed it and actually done the story some justice. Plus, I was really looking forward to seeing how they portrayed the Ritual of Chud - but instead was handed an anticlimactic half-assed ending.

picked up a military/starwars sci fi kinda book called galaxy's edge by Jason Anspach on sale last month, pretty good. it was actually two books in one, one really felt like space marine stuff and then the second really like bounty hunters and rogues a la star wars. pretty good though if not the deepest thing.
then I picked up these other books on sale that turned out to be really great called The Black Prism and The Blinding Knife by Brent Weeks. Part of a series called The Lightbringer that's a pretty interesting take on "magic" in a fantasy book.

I hear ya, HBO or some other pay channel might have been the better choice. Same with the Dark Tower.......I got to book 5 and it pissed me off, so i'm taking a break, and I have not seen the movie, but how can you have a 2 1/2 hr film based off of 7 SEVEN books!!!!??????
That drove me absolutely nuts when I heard that they were doing one movie for the entire series, let alone the plot. I don't think I'll ever watch the movie, before it was announced I had really hoped that they'd make a movie series with someone like Josh Brolin to play Roland and John Leguizamo to play Eddie.
I think I got through Songs of Susannah or at least partway through until I stumbled upon a spoiler for the last book and the ending - which completely ruined the rest of the series for me. What pissed you off? I loved the books up to that point.

What pissed me off about it was in book 5 instead of going forward King went back into the past, I have a real problem when authors go back in the past, and stray from the main story, sure I get that it gives you a backstory, but to me it takes me out of the story, and throws a new story at you. Ann Rice did it too with the 4th book of the Vampire chronicles, I gave up on that too. Book five of the DT series was a complete flashback, and that pissed me off.
It was definitely strange, but that book in general was kind of a mess so I get your feelings haha. I know the series was Stephen Kings side project, but man did he make them weird.

Yeah, I LOVED book 2 & 3........two was my fav though. I only have 2 more books to go, so I probably will finish them, but I am in no hurry tbh.
I'm confused. Book 5 of the Dark Tower is the Wolves of the Calla, and is not a flashback. Book 4 is Wizard and Glass, which was the story of Roland's past adventures as a young boy, and was the best book in the series IMO.
